Eat Your Way to Healthy Joints

Eat Your Way to Healthy Joints

Joint pain is no fun and can keep you from enjoying an active lifestyle. It is possible to eat your way to healthy joints and decrease inflammation and joint pain. Your joints, much like your body, require nutrients in order to repair and keep cells, ligaments, muscles and cartilage healthy. So investigate what you are putting on your fork and get ready to eat your way to healthier joints.

Go raw! Okay, you do not have to become a raw food activist in order to eat healthier. You do however, want to increase your daily intake of raw veggies as they are loaded with enzymes that can help break down nutrients in your food so that they can be used by your body.

Essential fatty acids found in nuts and seeds and their oil along with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in cold water fish is a must for well-lubricated healthy joints. Fatty acids can reduce swelling and discomfort in joints as well provide proper lubrication.

Foods such as nuts, seeds, salmon, sardines and vegetables such as cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and other green veggies such as collard and turnip greens, spinach, kale and green beans are an excellent source of essential fatty acids.

Good collagen production is essential to joint health. Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein made up of amino acids found in bones, muscles, body tissues, tendons and cartilage.Collagen comprises approximately one quarter of all of the protein in your body.  Collagen is important in avoiding osteoarthritis. One of the first indications of osteoarthritis development is the loss or breakdown of collagen.

Eating protein-rich foods can help boost collagen production because they are good sources of amino acids. Look for quality pasture and humane raised animal sources. Vegetable protein sources include nuts, seeds, legumes beans and some grains such as quinoa.

Quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid compound that is a natural anti-inflammatory.  Apples, red or black grapes, blueberries, blackberries, cherries and green teas are rich in quercetin.

Although you can eat your way to better joint health sometimes the food you choose could be the culprit to your pain. Even worse, if you are experiencing intestinal permeability (or leaky gut) this may lead to unexplained joint pain. Take for instance gluten. Most humans lack the enzymes to completely break down gluten; at best it is only partially digested. If this happens it can lead to undigested peptides instigating inflammation. If there is any intestinal permeability undigested fragments can seep through and over time may lead to increased inflammation in weak areas, in this case the joints.

At Sanoviv Medical Institute we use advanced testing for when it comes to gluten. We use the Array 3 Antibody Wheat and Gluten Proteome Reactivity and AutoimmunityTM test. With this test we are able to measure antibody production against 9 wheat proteins and peptides and 3 essential structure enzymes. Any of these antigens has the capacity to challenge the immune system even when there are no digestive symptoms present.  In other words, most think of gluten as causing digestive problems. Not so. Gluten can affect the brain, skin and immune system.

At Sanoviv we also advise if testing for the Array 3 to also test with the Array 4 Antibody Gluten-Associated Cross Reactive Foods and Food SensitivityTM test. Sometimes removing gluten may not be enough to healthy joints and other body complaints. This is where the Array 4 may help.

Most countries define gluten-free products based on the recommendation of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and World Health Organization. This codex alimentarius allows the inclusion of up to 0.3% protein from gluten containing grains in foods labeled gluten-free.  If the sensitive body is exposed to 0.3% protein, the immune system will recognize and react to the protein.[1] The Array 4 tests for 27 foods (including healthy foods) that may be an underlying culprit to true health and wellness. The Array 4 can assist by detecting both sensitivities and cross-reactions that may possibly allow for a possible continued gluten-like reaction.  In other words, if you have gotten off of gluten and you are still having symptoms it could be something you are consuming that is causing the inflammatory response to continue and aggravate.

Joint pain can be a common symptom of many diseases or a reminder from a past injury. Always pay attention when it comes to joint pain.  Seek the advice of your physician or qualified health care practitioner so that you can rule out any unforeseeable problems. At Sanoviv we have many programs to suit your needs. Your body has the power to heal and it starts with learning all you can to prevent injury and provide your body with the right nutrients to help in the healing process.

7 Reasons to Stop and Smell the Roses

By Karen Langston CN

In the infinite wisdom of the body, we find that there are two distinct pathways that respond to the inner and outer world: One, that is meant for protection and getting our body ready to respond to a perceived danger. The other, is meant to help the body recuperate and repair the daily wear and tear and keep it in an optimal state. The first is called the stress response, fueling the body’s active and alert state. The second is the relaxation response, calming everything so balance can be created again.
Ideally there should be a balance in these two states of the body, spending time in activity and rest. But, in our Western culture we are most used to being active, using our stress response for both work and play. This creates an imbalance where we can trigger many unwanted consequences that affect our mind and body, ranging from a decreased quality of life to serious health issues.
Here are some of the benefits of stopping and smelling the roses, of learning how to find more balance even though we are having fun being so active:

1. It feels good! One of the main reasons to stop and relax is because it feels so good to do so. At first, sitting down and taking it easy might seem awkward, but we seem to get the hang of it pretty quickly. Relaxing and taking it easy, especially once we get the hang of it, releases endorphins and other feel good chemicals in the body.

2. It’s good for you! Time spent in relaxation is time spent replenishing the body. When the body is relaxed, it focuses on digesting, eliminating, repairing and replacing what

3. It increases your creativity! When you relax and calm your mind, it’s more likely to have newer, fresher thoughts and points of view connected to a specific situation. When we are stressed and do not take the time to rest, we can be recycling the same old thoughts and patterns of thinking over and over again.

4. It keeps you effective! Studies show that a combination of stress and relaxation are important to help us stay sharp and achieve our goals. At first, stress alone helps us stay focused and alert on the task at hand. But as stress increases, our ability to be effective decreases, as there is too much going on internally for the body to handle and hinders our ability to connect with the external activities.

5. It makes you more resilient! The more you relax the more resources you have at your disposal to face difficult life events and deal with them effectively. Cultivating a calm state allows your body to be more hardy and resilient in the face of difficulties, allowing you to respond in the way you choose to, versus reacting in the way the circumstances demand.

6. It’s associated with better health! The research is pretty conclusive and it shows that when we spend time relaxing, this has a very beneficial impact on our mental and physical health. This is a way of resetting everything within us back to a more optimal state.

7. It’s connected with increased happiness! The more we relax, the easier it is for the feel good chemicals in our body to work at optimal levels. Things that would upset us in a high stress state and more easily managed and dealt with, leaving us with an overall feeling of satisfaction.

So, make a commitment to practice something that soothes and calms you every day, like deep belly breathing, soft and gentle Yoga, looking out into nature of anything else that allows you to be still and open.

Rebounding for fun and fitness!

By Ruben Guereña and Gerardo Lopez

Rebounding is one of the most fun classes we give at Sanoviv Medical Institute. Rebounding is an effective way to exercise that has many health benefits; includung weight loss, body toning, lowering cholesterol levels, helps to prevent heart disease, decreases your blood pressure, stimulates metabolism, aids your lymphatic system and a lot more.  If you want to read about how the lymphatic system and how it works, please click on the following link https://www.sanoviv.com/blog/2011/01/24/lets-learn-about-lymph/

By far the most important benefit that you can get by using a rebounder is that bouncing up and down makes you happy, and that is the best way to combat stress.

Important note:

Please make sure you have your doctor’s approval before you start any exercise program.
The following are just a few examples of the many exercises you can do on a rebounder.

As with any exercise routine, you should start with a warm up.

Health bounce (basic bounce)Stand in the center of the mini trampoline with feet slightly apart; always keeping your knees slightly bent. (See photo below)This will be your basic starting stance for all the exercises done on the rebounder. Do this exercise from 2 to 3 minutes.

Note: If you are a beginner, lightly bounce up and down making sure your feet do not lift off the rebounder mat and hold on to the stability bar for better balance. As you become used to the rebounder, you can lift your feet a couple of inches off the mat.

Exercise 1 (Cardio) As you can see in the photos, each time you bounce off the rebounder you alternate your feet placing one foot in front of the other. Do this exercise from 1 – 2 minutes.

Exercise 2 (Cardio)

Start out with your right arm out and feet shoulder width apart. As you bounce off the rebounder you bring your leg behind your back and touch your foot with your right hand (see photo) and go back to the starting position. Do this exercise from  1 – 2 minutes per opposite arm and leg. Make sure to work both arms and legs.

Exercise 3 (cardio)

Starting with the basic stance, lift your right arm to the side and bend at the elbow as shown. Lift your left knee and bring your bent right arm forward.

Cool Down
For the cool down, go back to the health bounce but make sure you do not bring your feet of the mat. Just move up and down very lightly. Do this until you feel your heart rate slow down.

Calf and hamstring stretch

Holding to the stability bar, place one foot in front with toes pointing up. Keep back foot flat and bend knee slightly and lean your weight back until you feel the stretch behind the leg. It is very important that you breathe normally during stretching to help your muscles relax. Stretch for 20 to 30 seconds and switch foot.

Quad stretch

For better stability hold on to the stability bar. Bend one leg and hold it as shown. Make sure your knees are close together (do not flare your knee). Breathe normally and release your leg after 20 or 30 seconds. Repeat on other leg.

Great job!

Well, this will be the last post for 2012; we hope that we were able to motivate you to GET STARTED on a path to a better mental and physical health. Remember that for exercise to show any results you have to take into consideration 4 things which are Duration, intensity, Frequency and Mode. I honestly think that for the first 3 to work, Mode has a big role in this. In other words, if you enjoy the activity you are doing you will stick to it. So choose wisely.

We want to hear from you. Let us know how we can help you to GET STARTED.

From the fitness team here at Sanoviv Medical Institute we want to wish you a safe and Happy Holidays and a New Year filled with prosperity and success.

 See you in 2013

Staying Young and Healthy

by Daniela Colin MD & Sue Ward, MS

Aging is a natural process that begins the minute we are born.  Organism aging is noted by the body’s declining ability to respond to stress and the increased risk of disease.  Cellular aging occurs due to damage to our cell membranes by different aggressor agents.  If we consider aging as a disease, then it is treatable.

There are several scientific theories that attempt to explain aging, however, we know that in addition to our bodies being exposed to damaging agents, our internal processes produce waste products, so our bodies need to be able to effectively detoxify and eliminate in order to achieve optimal balance with all cellular functions. This requires proper energy and nutrients which is provided by our food intake.  When we are nutrient-depleted and not eating a healthy diet, we may suffer cellular damage or an impaired ability to repair and detoxify tissues.  When we are over exposed to damaging toxins from our food, environment, stress, and lifestyle, our body’s repair systems cannot keep up and thus structural and functional damage occurs.

Here are some tips that help to prevent and repair damage to your cells:

1)     Increase organic vegetables and fruits in your diet.  These foods are nutrient dense and especially high in antioxidants. Consider juicing as an option including plenty of green juices and perhaps wheat grass juice.

2)     Improve your diet by focusing on eating whole foods while avoiding processed convenience foods that are loaded with cell-damaging ingredients.

3)     Stay physically active!  Exercise improves blood flow to all tissues, increases the body’s metabolism, helps to maintain good energy and assists with detoxification of harmful substances through regular sweating.

4)     Drink plenty of pure, clean water to maintain good cellular hydration.

5)     Get good quality, refreshing sleep each night.  This allows your body time to detoxify, repair and build a strong immune system.

You may consider some therapies offered by local integrative health clinics:

Intravenous glutathione is an antioxidant therapy that neutralizes harmful free radicals that are damaging to our cells.  Free radicals are formed during normal metabolic processes. Glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant, also increases the amount of vitamin E and C in the body.  The more effectively our body scrubs excess free radicals from our system, the slower we age biologically.

Ozone therapy consists of three atoms of oxygen that act as “supercharged oxygen.” As an anti-aging therapy, it stimulates increased uptake and utilization of oxygen by stimulating the increased formation of anti-oxidant enzymes, as well as the enzymes responsible for the release of oxygen at the cellular level. These enzyme deficiencies are often at the root of most chronic disease and are the same enzymes that become depleted as a result of the aging process.  Ozone therapy should be applied in a medical setting and should not be inhaled (some home air filters emit ozone–these are not recommended).

Detoxification and Healthy Living programs consist of a variety of therapies designed to detoxify your body and educate you about healthy living in today’s toxic world.  Such programs offer sauna therapy, organic cleansing diets, juicing, colon hydrotherapy, meditation and relaxation, massage and other spa therapies as well as optimal rest in a non-toxic, healing environment.

Consider these tips for staying young and healthy as you enjoy a vibrant life!

Are you plugged in? Earthing and the radical implications of energy balance in health.

By Jonás G. Chong Curiel
Head of Department – Psychology and Spirituality Programs
Sanoviv Medical Institute

There are many things to consider when following a healthy lifestyle: the right diet, the right type and amount of exercise, the right supplementation and a long list of etcetera’s that culminate in our desired health goals. Most of us like to stay up to date and learn any new information that can support improved health and vitality.

One thing that is rarely considered and yet of vital importance for overall health is to know if we are plugged into our vital source of energy. Because just like TV’s, computers and other devices are plugged into the light socket, human beings need to plug into their source to function at optimal levels. This source is the Earth. Many scientific studies have been produced that show the direct correlation between connecting with the earth and multiple health benefits. Also, being disconnected can contribute to many of the health problems that we face in modern societies.

As life has evolved on the surface of the Earth, these energies and frequencies have helped shape our constant change. In early civilizations, we lived connected to the Earth; we walked barefoot or with leather shoes that are electrically conductive, when in contact with perspiration. We slept on the Earth on animal skins. Since the 1960’s and the general use of insulated shoes, this connection has been lost, as very rarely do we spend a significant amount of time receiving these energies.

The scientific study and practice of this phenomenon is called Earthing. Earthing is defined as “coupling your body to the Earth’s eternal and gentle surface energies.” Studies suggest that while connected to the earth, you receive its natural healing energy into the body.

Our body responds favorably to this Earth energy, stimulating healing responses, by directly connecting our skin (preferably our feet) to a natural, electrically conductive surface like grass, dirt, gravel or sand. It might seem surprising that one of the best things that you can do for your health is walking barefoot on natural ground.

Many scientists have been studying the effects of Earthing with very promising results. Research indicates that when we are connected to the Earth, the energetic output of our body becomes one with the Earth, thus cancelling out other frequencies that can be harmful to our well-being.

One of the main health benefits of Earthing is being able to use the surface electrons of the Earth for our own internal energetic processes. Electrons play a huge role in the cells ability to stay healthy, decrease inflammation and create balance. Antioxidants are simply molecules that inhibit oxidation of cells by donating an extra electron that free radicals normally steal from cells.

Also, some research suggests that being in direct contact with the Earth helps balance the stress hormone cortisol that is implicated in many of the chronic diseases that we face. Earthing has been shown to stimulate the normal cycle of this hormone.

Some of the benefits of Earthing include:

  • Defuses the cause of inflammation, and improves or eliminates the symptoms of many inflammation related disorders.
  • Reduces or eliminates chronic pain.
  • Improves sleep in most cases.
  • Increases energy.
  • Lowers stress and promotes calmness in the body by cooling down the nervous system and stress hormones.
  • Normalizes the body’s biological rhythms.
  • Thins blood and improves blood pressure and flow.
  • Relieves muscle tension and headaches.
  • Lessens hormonal and menstrual symptoms.
  • Dramatically speeds healing and helps prevent bed sores.
  • Reduces or eliminates jet lag.
  • Protects the body against potentially health disturbing environmental electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
  • Accelerates recovery from intense athletic activity.

This is possibly one of the easiest things that you can do for your health. We recommend trying to integrate the practice of Earthing into your daily routine, spending at least 15 to 20 minutes walking barefoot on a natural surface.

For more information on Earthing you can read the book “Earthing” by Clint Ober or visit his website www.earthinginstitute.net

Too Much Caffeine

Is your morning beverage harming your health?

Although organic coffee in moderation may be tolerated by some, most people are generally drinking coffee in excess. If you are like many people you may drink coffee cup after cup in an attempt to increase your energy by getting another “hit” of caffeine. The problem is instead of feeling more energized, you will start to experience energy crashes which can lead to more and more time on the caffeine roller coaster.

There are many symptoms people may experience from too much caffeine; besides the well-known “coffee jitters”. Other symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, anxiety and/or irritability, sweaty palms, fatigue, restlessness and insomnia. Lesser known symptoms of too much caffeine may include muscular pain and tension in the back and/or neck, skin rashes including psoriasis, and even obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

Too much caffeine can also trigger acid reflux, better known as heartburn. Caffeine lowers the pressure on the esophageal sphincter, allowing food to come back up the esophagus, which causes the uncomfortable burning sensations in the chest and in the throat. Like regular coffee, decaf coffee can also trigger heartburn because it is made from highly acidic coffee beans.

What is the answer to this? For certain health conditions, including sensitivity to coffee bean, Teecino is the perfect coffee substitute. Teeccino is non-acidic and the natural potassium from Teeccino’s ingredients helps alkalize the body, making it a perfect choice for people who suffer from too much acidity. Teeccino can be brewed just like coffee and has the full bodied, roasted flavor of coffee. Teeccino is also naturally caffeine free as opposed to decaf coffee, which uses harsh toxic chemicals to process out most but not all of the caffeine.

Because Sanoviv is a gluten free hospital; we recommend using the dandelion root formulas of Teeccino for our guests. Dandelion root is a very popular herb, which is often included in detox and cleansing diets due to its reputation for stimulating the liver and gallbladder.

Caroline MacDougal, the creator of Teeccino, combined certified organic, roasted dandelion root with Teeccino’s other ingredients including organic chicory root, organic carob pods, and organic and sustainably wild harvested ramon nuts to create a variety of dandelion flavors. Barley formulas are also available and naturally caffeine free.

Teeccino is doctor recommended because it also provides an energy boost from pinitol, a natural compound found in carob, one of Teeccino’s herbal ingredients, that reduces insulin resistance and helps reenergize the body.

It may seem like a bit of a task to get off the caffeine roller coaster, depending on how much caffeine you are currently consuming in a day. We recommend a step down approach which simply means adding Teeccino to your regular coffee a little at a time until you have weened yourself completely off the caffeine altogether. It may take up to a month to completely free yourself from the caffeine, but it will be worth it.

A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is thought of in many different ways as evidenced by these quotes through the ages:

“A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.” ~ Irish Proverb ~

“There is only one thing that people like that is good for them; a good night’s sleep”
~ Edgar Watson Howe ~

“Sleep is the best medicine”
~ Dalai Lama ~

“Now, blessings light on him that first invented sleep!  It covers a man all over, thoughts and all, like a cloak; it is meat for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, heat for the cold, and cold for the hot. It is the current coin that purchases all the pleasures of the world cheap, and the balance that sets the king and the shepherd, the fool and the wise man, even.”   ~ Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605 ~

Good, refreshing sleep is essential for optimal health. However, sleep difficulties occur in about 75% of the population.  Although a short-lived bout of insomnia is generally not worrisome, chronic sleep loss can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure, weight gain, impaired learning and memory, mood disorders and cardiovascular issues.  Sleep deprivation can also lead to chronic degenerative disease by altering immune function.  There is evidence that insomnia is linked to early death and serious declines in quality of life.  Safety may also be a concern since sleep debt can cause lapses in alertness leading to mistakes, such as medical errors, traffic accidents and other work accidents. Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety and tension account for about 50% of insomnia.  However, dietary and lifestyle factors can also play a major role.  Sanoviv recommends trying natural sleep remedies as outlined below prior to considering prescription sleep aids.

A number of aspects of your health and quality of life are linked to sleep, and these aspects are impaired when you are sleep deprived.

Your Learning, Memory, and Mood

Students who have trouble grasping new information or learning new skills are often advised to “sleep on it,” and that advice seems well founded. Recent studies reveal that people can learn a task better if they are well rested. They also can better remember what they learned if they get a good night’s sleep after learning the task than if they are sleep deprived. Exactly what happens during sleep to improve our learning, memory, and insight isn’t known.  Experts suspect, however, that while people sleep, they form or strengthen the pathways of brain cells needed to perform these tasks. This process may explain why sleep is needed for proper brain development in infants.

Not only is a good night’s sleep required to form new learning and memory pathways in the brain, but sleep is also necessary for those pathways to work well. Several studies show that lack of sleep causes thinking processes to slow down. Lack of sleep also makes it harder to focus and pay attention. Lack of sleep can make you more easily confused. Studies also find that a lack of sleep leads to faulty decision making and more risk taking. A lack of sleep slows down your reaction time, which is particularly important to driving and other tasks that require quick responses. The bottom line is: Not getting a good night’s sleep can be dangerous!

Even if you don’t have a mentally or physically challenging day ahead of you, you should still get enough sleep to put yourself in a good mood.  Most people report being irritable, or downright unhappy, when they lack sleep. People who chronically suffer from a lack of sleep, either because they do not spend enough time in bed or because they have an untreated sleep disorder, are at greater risk of developing depression. Some experts think depression after childbirth (postpartum blues) is caused, in part, by a lack of sleep.

Tips for Improved Sleep

Your diet can play a role in the quality of your sleep.  For example, the quality of sleep may be affected if your body is working hard to digest food rather than preparing for cellular repair and the next day’s energy needs. Therefore, be sure to eat at least 3 hours prior to your sleep time.  Here are a few additional dietary tips:

  • Limit your intake of caffeine, including coffee, soda, tea, hot cocoa and chocolate. Caffeine can sometimes peak up to 18 hours after ingestion.
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol intake, especially prior to sleep. Alcohol impairs serotonin production and disrupts normal levels of this important neurotransmitter, making sleep more difficult.
  • Avoid drinking too much water or tea close to bedtime to prevent night-time urination.

Make your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep.  Avoid eating, watching television, or working in your bedroom. Be sure your room is dark, clean, quiet and comfortable.  It is important to have a comfortable mattress and pillow for good structural alignment during sleep.  Note: Sanoviv recommends a natural memory foam mattress. In terms of biomechanics, memory foam is best but the most common memory foam is highly toxic and made with petroleum-based chemicals. Since you sleep and breathe the fumes for 7-9 hours in a row, it is important to make a safer decision about the toxicity of your mattress. One company that makes the world’s only natural memory foam mattress is called Essentia. You can find their products on http://www.myessentia.com

While creating a healthy bedroom for sleep, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Move your clock out of sight during the night.  Waking up and looking at the clock can produce anxiety and prevent sleep.
  • Clear your nightstand of any electronic gadgets such as cell phones, cordless phones, chargers and alarm clocks.  Blue light displays and other electronics can interfere with sleep.
  • Regular daily, moderate physical activity is known to improve sleep.
  • Avoid excessive exercise or stimulating activities too close to bedtime.  Even a stimulating television show or movie or a stressful phone call can affect sleep quality. Be sure to allow your body and mind plenty of time to “wind down” prior to sleep.
  • Maintain a bedtime routine and do the same relaxing activities each night.  Go to bed and rise in the morning the same time every day, including weekends.
  • Get checked for sleep apnea disorders which can interfere with quality sleep.
  • Gentle stretching before bed may help improve sleep.
  • Consider chiropractic care to help balance the nervous system and assist with any structural alignment issues.

How Stress Affects Sleep

Insomnia has a strong link with and is often rooted in how we handle stress in our life. Sometimes insomnia lasts just a few days, other times it can persist for months or years, depending on how well we deal with stress and if the stressful situations in our life are within the bounds of what we can handle in a healthy way.  This can create a state where we are unable to “shut off” our minds at night and think, worry or ponder about things, instead of relaxing into sleep and rest which our body might sorely need. Once you have eliminated other contributing factors to insomnia, like certain foods, activities and medications, you can focus on creating sleep rituals that can support deeper, more restful sleep. Practice deep breathing, meditation or centered prayer.  Listen to a relaxing audio tape with sounds of nature or soothing music or a guided meditation. If this does not work, get up and go do something else until you feel sleepy and try again.

When sleep loss due to insomnia is a chronic, pervasive condition, it is highly recommended that you see a mental health professional or sleep disorder specialist to seek more comprehensive solutions.
