Loving your mind

Continually Fan the Flames of your Intention

When it comes to getting results with your health thought and action are necessary. A thought can inspire, “what if?” Analysis of the thought leads to “I wonder.” This in turn, both physically motivates you to act and allows for the manifestation of the thought. But, sometimes your little voice takes over and talks you out of acting on a potentially great idea.

Thoughts are inspirations that with the right mindset can manifest into physical goals. Every year we make a conscious decision to elevate our business, or become better at something, or to achieve better health.
What are your thoughts surrounding the accomplishment of your goal? Are they positive burning desires that motivate you to stay focused? Or, are they thoughts of never amounting to anything? Followed by, a self-unworthiness perception of “why bother as it will just be like everything else; nothing ever goes my way.”
You have the power to take your thoughts and allow them to become your motivational tool to succeed in all of your goals and desires. You have the power to elevate your goals and aspirations. Take your thoughts and make them so. It is that easy.

Here at Sanoviv Medical Institute we have many medical programs that include a visit with the psychology department. We do this purposefully because our mind body and soul are connected. If the doctors are working physically to make a person well but that person does not believe they are worthy of wellness, or are in fear of wellness, or doesn’t believe they can heal; those thoughts become more powerful than the medicine.
Do you have a health intention? Revisit your goal. Where are you at with the goal? Take your goal of health and turn it into an intention and make the intention your primary focus. Write out what it is that you need to allow for this intention to be achieved. Do not hold back; write out what it will take, even if you do not have the resources (such as the financial well being) currently to believe that it could be possible. To make it simpler, if you could wave a magic wand to grant your wish what would it be and what do you need?
A thought does not allow for the physical constraints of “can’t”. What we think, we have the ability to manifest physically. Our vibrational energy synchs with the energy of the resources we need to make it so.

If this has not happened for you yet take a look at how you are feeling towards this intentional goal. What are your thoughts? Are they positive or negative? Do you have faith to put your need, want or desire out to the Universe and know that it will be taken care of? Or is your little voice thinking through all the items keeping you from this goal?
The law of the Universe is to provide what we need if we feel we are worthy of that desire, passion or goal. It is quite simple, and yet we make it so difficult. It is a leap of faith to put trust into what we cannot see. If you allow the Universe to act upon your intention, the messages will come, but it is up to you to allow yourself to see the messages. To allow the connection you must clear your thoughts of all physical constrains and make yourself open and ready to receive Universal messages that will bring you what you need to accomplish your goal.

Our body, mind and spirit follow natural spiritual law. We need to connect with our earth in order to become grounded and connected with the present moment. Being grounded allows you to become spiritually connected to the Universal vibration and allows for intention.

How you become grounded is by walking barefoot on Mother Earth. Here at Sanoviv we have beautiful luscious green grass and you will see many people walking barefoot in the grass. We actually hold classes where you walk barefoot in the grass to ground your energy and well being.
Take a walk barefoot in the sand, dirt or grass. Hike into the woods or desert and become aware of the stillness. Listen to the breeze, smell the air and be grateful for the connection. Connecting with nature allows for realignment of your intentions and your desire.

When you feel your goal slipping away you have two choices, either refuel with positive intention, or give up. But before you give up ask yourself this, “How has giving up worked for me in the past? Did it help me to ascertain my goals, aspirations and desires?” The answer will be no every time. We cannot make conscious intention and then expect it to arrive on our threshold the next day especially with negative thoughts or feeling unworthy of the goal. It takes time and when the time, space and sequence are right, it will manifest.

You have the choice to allow your surroundings to physically and spiritually affect your flow of intention. They can continually fan the flames of your goals and desires. We are all faced with situations, critical moments and physical blocks that may hindered our goals. Do not allow this to break the connection of your intentions. Keep in mind they too are a moment in time and shall soon pass. Keep your intention and passion every day, feel the emotions of your goal. Take me- time, down time, laugh, have fun and refuel and connect with your higher vibration. The intention lies within you to make it so. When you reach your goal, repeat this process and make it so.

At Sanoviv, we see the importance of a balanced approach to cancer therapies. Not All standard treatments are bad and not all alternative treatments are good. In fact, we believe it is important to incorporate the best of each approach into an integrative therapy. Many of our natural and biological therapies have their roots in Europe where they have been practiced for many decades.

Our integrative form of oncology uses many traditional modalities such as high does vitamin C, Laetrile (B17), homeopathy and intravenous ozone therapy in combination with medical procedures such as regional hypothermia, hyperbaric oxygen and sometimes surgery (when indicated) to help our guests win the battle against cancer. Some of our guests chose to undergo chemotherapy at other facilities and come to Sanoviv for additional supportive therapies.

Our 5-part approach to overcoming cancer includes:

Detoxification involves removal of harmful substances from the body which is continually confronted with toxins. These toxins are found in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, in our clothes, in furniture and even in our mouth as dental toxins. In order to optimize the immune system response and reduce side effects of treatment, the body needs to be free of heavy metals and toxins. At Sanoviv, you are in a completely toxin-free environment to optimize healing. A detox regimen including calcium EDTA and other biological substances may be used to help the body rid itself of toxins, improving metabolic function. Dental treatment may be needed to eliminate additional sources of toxins.

Immune Modulation therapy brings the ratio of different types of immune cells back into balance so that they can perform their critical function to search, detect, and destroy foreign or diseased cells. Balancing the immune system is much better than simply stimulating the immune system (which could cause it to overreact and attack healthy cells). Restoring healthy immune function is especially important for those with cancer.

At Sanoviv, we accomplish this by administering Transfer Factors. These are very small molecules, found in all species, that help cells to communicate with and identify one another. Transfer Factors are polypeptides (44 amino acids). Because of their small size (less than 5kDa), they do not trigger allergic reactions. They work by modulating TH1-TH2 helper cells and cytokines, improving the body’s ability to detect fungi, parasites, intracellular organisms, viruses, and cancer. Transfer factors also have the ability to suppress an overreacting immune system.

The use of Transfer Factors to balance and restore immune function is backed by 25 years of research and clinical experience. Recent discoveries include more powerful Transfer Factors extracted from the spleen of crocodiles and sharks. Correcting immune defects and imbalances can improve outcomes for cancer patients.

Substitution involves giving the body the substances it needs to regain health. We apply orthomolecular medicine, which uses vitamins, minerals and amino acids to promote health and healing in the body. High intravenous doses of these substances show a pharmaceutical effect and can have an immediate impact on the immune system and metabolism. Since the days of Linus Pauling, orthomolecular medicine has been traditionally used in biological oncology to reduce tumor size, kill cancer cells, curb the spread of cancer and improve the quality of life.

We use different therapeutic interventions to enhance your body’s ability to destroy cancer cells, while respecting the integrity of normal, healthy cells. These are done in conjunction with other therapies to synergize their potency while diminishing side effects. Regional hyperthermia is used to heat up tumor material causing its metabolism to break down. Tumors do not tolerate temperatures over 41 degrees centigrade. Because of their primitive blood supply, tumors are not able to easily divert heat. The metabolism of tumor cells is different to that of healthy cells. This makes them a target for regional hyperthermia. This therapy is used in combination with other modalities such as high dose vitamin C, laetrile (B17), hyperbaric oxygen and orthomolecular medicine.

Our psychologists help guide guests toward recognizing patterns in their lives that may have made them susceptible to cancer. This may include providing solutions for stress management and lifestyle coaching. Through different forms of bodywork and mind-body healing, inner balance is increased, internal stress is released and the self-healing powers of the body are stimulated.

Healthy Product for November Dry Skin Brush & Brushing Techniques

Dry Skin Brushing for Better Health

Important facts about your skin –

The skin is the largest most important eliminative organ in the body and is responsible for one quarter of the body’s detoxification each day.

  1. The skin eliminates over one pound of waste acids each day in the average adult, most of it through the sweat glands.
  2. That the skin is known also as our third kidney.
  3. That the skin receives one third of all the blood circulated in the body.
  4. That the skin is the last to receive nutrients in the body, yet the first to show signs of imbalance or deficiency.

Detoxification is performed by a number of organs, glands, and transportation systems, including the skin, gut, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymphatic system, and mucous membranes.
The dry skin brushing technique deals with detoxification of the skin.

Dry brushing stimulates all the above organs; thus aiding in detoxification because it provides a gentle internal massage.

Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing:

 1. Cleanses the lymphatic system and stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified. NOTE: After several days of dry brushing, you may notice the gelatinous mucoid material in your stools.

2. Removes dead skin layers which can help improve skin texture and cell renewal.

3. Strengthens the immune system.

4. Stimulates the hormone and oil-producing glands.

5. Tightens the skin by increasing the flow of blood, thereby preventing premature aging..

6. Stimulates circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas.

7. Improves the function of the nervous system.

8. Helps aid digestion – helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores.

9. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health.

10. Dry skin brushing helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits.

11. Dry skin brushing also rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in       the skin.

12. Individuals who sit at a computer screen all day long will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing. People who have inactive lifestyles or jobs usually experience stiff and sore necks and shoulders that reach into their arms and down their spines and into their lower backs. Increased blood flow begins entering the areas brushed and you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated.

13. Removes toxic cellulite. Cellulite is made up of toxic materials that are accumulated in your body’s fat cells as they are unable to be eliminated. So, rather than liposuction surgery, try utilizing the “dry skin brushing” techniques combined with an alkaline diet program and a great exercising routine. It will break down the unwelcome toxic body deposits and send them out of your body through the elimination channels discussed above

Tips for Dry Skin Brushing:

Always brush your dry body before you shower or bathe because you will want to wash off the impurities from the skin that are a result from the brushing action.

You can do the brushing head-to-toe or toe-to-head.  It doesn’t matter as long as the entire body is brushed. Long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction towards your heart, to help drain the lymph back to your heart.
IMPORTANT: Stroking away from your heart puts extra pressure on the valves within the veins and lymph vessels and can cause ruptured vessels and varicose veins.

Use a lighter pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet.

Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning.  A thorough skin brushing takes about 15 minutes, but any time spent brushing prior to bathing will benefit the body.

If you are feeling ill, increasing the treatments to twice a day is good.

You can also dry brush areas of cellulite five to 10 minutes twice a day to help achieve cellulite dissolving. This technique needs to be done consistently for a minimum of five months.

Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken; such as areas of skin rash, wounds, cuts, and infections. Also, never brush an area affected by poison oak or poison ivy.

Finish up with your regular shower and ending with three hot and cold cycles. That means turning on the water as hot as you can take it for several seconds, then as cold as you can handle it, then hot, then cold for three cycles. End with either hot or cold. This will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bringing more blood to the outer layers of the skin.

After getting out of the shower
, dry off vigorously and massage your skin with pure plant oils such as olive, avocado, apricot, almond, sesame, coconut or cocoa butter. Add a little peanut and Castor oil to the mix if you have arthritis. This will help relieve some of the pain.

Clean your skin brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, you should dry your skin brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.

If you follow these guidelines in about 30 days you will begin to see and experience the changes. Please remember to be patient and keep up with the program daily.

For a thorough lymphatic cleansing
, perform dry skin brushing daily for a minimum of three months.

Dry Skin Brushing – simple version.

1. Begin with your feet and brush vigorously in circular motions.

2. Continue brushing up your legs.

3. Proceed to your hands and arms.

4. Brush your entire back and abdomen area, shoulders and neck.

5. Use circular counter-clockwise strokes on the abdomen.

6. Lightly brush the breasts.

7. Brush upwards on the back and down from the neck. Better yet, have a friend, spouse or family member brush your back.

The Sanoviv Experience – Putting Your Mind at Ease

June 6, 2012

I haven’t been to see a doctor and hadn’t been to the dentist in over 4 years.  They both scare me to death.

Since I was in high school (I’m currently 36 years old), I had always worried and wondered where my health status was at.  I was nervous to come because it had been so long since I had seen a doctor.  But I was immediately put at ease when I met the Sanoviv driver at the San Diego International Airport (Sanoviv arranged everything).  The drive into Mexico and to Sanoviv was a piece of cake- I felt safe the entire time.  I was greeted at the door by Ivan whose job was to schedule my days and answer my questions.

Day 1 consisted of  lunch and dinner, an orientation and getting to know the beautiful facilities.

Day 2 consisted of a COMPLETE physical exam: clinical blood draws, doctor’s exam, dental exam, x-ray, ultrasound, psychological consultation, chiropractic consult, and a Swedish massage!

Day 3 consisted of some more testing, educational classes, meditation, a great workout, and my first pedicure.

My last day consisted of more meditation, stretching, a workout, educational classes, a dental appointment to address some minor issues, another chiropractic session  to address some posture issues, medical consultation to talk about ALL of my tests.  Where else in the world can you see so many different doctors in such a short time.  On top of all that, they ALL work together to discuss your results.

I was simply blown away by the integration, quality of care and how relaxed I was the entire time.  And now with a clean bill of health and a few lifestyle recommendations to help myself live even better, my mind is completely at ease.

Healing through Laughter Yoga

It is a revolutionary way of dealing with stress — simple and practical, yet at the same time so deep that it can bring a lot of relief and joy as we incorporate this into our lives.  In a group, and at the rhythm of HO HO HA HA HA, clapping and maintaining eye contact with childlike playfulness, Laughter Yoga gives us the opportunity to reencounter ourselves with joy and laughter. It offers the chance to move out of the comfort zone, waking up our internal creativity and playfulness.

Dr. Madan Kataria, a family physician, started Laughter Yoga clubs with a group of people in Mumbai India in 1995. He was very interested in the impact of laughter on health based on the work of Dr. Lee Berk and also the work of Norman Cousins in the book, Anatomy of an Illness. So he asked the participants to simulate laughter for no reason, which lead to genuine laughter becoming contagious, and it went on for more than 10 minutesamong the group. Dr Kataria integrated unique exercises with breathing exercises from yoga, making this a powerful combination for joy, stress relief and more.  After this, more and more people started to join the Laughter Yoga clubs and soon this small group became an international, growing movement with more than 6000 Laughter Yoga clubs in different countries around the world.

Now what is exactly Laughter Yoga? Laughter Yoga combines unconditional laughter with Yogic Breathing (Pranayama).  Anyone can laugh for no reason, without the need of humor, jokes or comedy.  We can start with simulated laughter as a body exercise in a group; making eye contact and using childlike playfulness.  It soon turns into real and contagious laughter. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits.

Did you know that kids laugh between 300 and 400 times a day? Surprised? Well let me tell you that adults laugh just 14 to 16 times a day!!  Children don’t necessarily laugh because they are happy they laugh because they are joyful, which is their true nature.

If you think about this for a moment how many times you have seen your kids, grandchildren or nieces and nephews play and laugh for no reason. This is the essence of Laughter Yoga. We can all laugh for no reason and it is actually quite easy.  Laughter Yoga gives us the opportunity to remember our true joyful self by a series of uniquely designed exercises combined with deep breathing.  It is important to note however, there is a difference between being happy and being joyful.  Happiness can be conditioned to something external. For example, “When I get that car I will be happy,” or “When I finish this, I will be happy,” or “When I get married, I will be happy.”  We condition our happiness to “something” or “someone” out there. Joy on the other hand comes from experiencing oneself in the present moment (the here and now), making full contact with sensations in our bodies that does not involve rationalizing.

What are the benefits of incorporating laughter in to my life?  Studies have shown that more than 70% of doctors visits and prescriptions are linked to health issues related with stress.  When you incorporate laughter in to your daily life, you open up to the many benefits it offers.

  • Stabilizes blood pressure
  • Massages the vital organs
  • Tones the abdominal muscles
  • Stimulates blood circulation
  • Increases oxygenated blood
  • Boosts immunity
  • Lowers stress hormones
  • Relaxes your muscles
  • Prevents heart disease
  • Adds joy and zest to life
  • Eases anxiety and fear
  • Enhances resilience
  • Strengthens relationships
  • Enhances teamwork
  • Helps defuse conflict
  • Promotes group bonding and much more!

Humor and laughter in our life has been a subject of study thorough the years.  In 1979 Norman Cousins was diagnosed with a form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. His struggle with this illness is detailed in the book Anatomy of an Illness.  Doctors told him that he had little chance of surviving, so he developed a recovery program incorporating mega doses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx brother’s films.

“I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep,” he reported. “When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval.”      –Norman Cousins

Even history reminds us of the importance of laughter in health:

“A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.”
  ~ Proverbs 17:22

“Let the surgeon take care to regulate the whole regimen of the patient’s life for joy and happiness, allowing his relatives and special friends to cheer him, and by having someone tell him jokes.”
~    Fourteenth century French surgeon Henri de Mondeville
Dr William Fry M. D., psychiatrist and professor emeritus from the Stanford University School of Medicine and pioneer in the field of humor research, proved that jubilous laughter provides and excellent physical workout diminishing the risk of suffering respiratory infections and helping the body to produce endorphins.
“Humor opposes directly those emotions which have been specifically recorded as being associated with precipitation of heart attack. These emotions are fear and rage. Rage is impossible when mirth prevails.”
Dr Lee Berk, studied the physical impact of mirthful laughter at a physiological level. Two groups that had antecedents of having heart attack.  One group was treated with conventional medicine and the other group was asked to observe funny videos for 30 minutes daily.  After a year he found out that the humor group had fewer arrhythmias, lower high blood pressure and lower stress hormones and required fewer doses of medication. The most interesting result was that the humor group had 20% reoccurrence of heart attacks while the other group had 50 % reoccurrence of heart attacks.

Patch Adams, medical doctor, clown, social activist and subject of the film Patch Adams, is founder and director of the Gesundheit! Institute, a holistic medical community based on the idea that we cannot separate the health of the individual from the health of the community and of society.  Expanding “clown diplomacy” by means of organized trips of non-professional clowns to refuge camps, shelters, checkpoints and other places where systemic violence has crushed the human spirit.

Many Health facility centers have noticed the impact of laughter in health recovery and better quality of life and it is becoming very popular in hospitals as well around the world due to the huge benefits in stress reduction and support of the immune system as well as the liberation of endorphins (natural anesthetics of our body).

Here at Sanoviv it is a joy to share this practice with our guests and staff members.  Laughter Yoga is practiced at least two times per week in the mornings to start the day in a more positive, peaceful and balanced manner. If you know about a laughter yoga club in your community or near the area where you live, I invite you to live the experience and give yourself the gift of laughing out loud and receive the benefits of it.

Very good !!  Very good !! Yaaaay!!!!!

A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is thought of in many different ways as evidenced by these quotes through the ages:

“A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.” ~ Irish Proverb ~

“There is only one thing that people like that is good for them; a good night’s sleep”
~ Edgar Watson Howe ~

“Sleep is the best medicine”
~ Dalai Lama ~

“Now, blessings light on him that first invented sleep!  It covers a man all over, thoughts and all, like a cloak; it is meat for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, heat for the cold, and cold for the hot. It is the current coin that purchases all the pleasures of the world cheap, and the balance that sets the king and the shepherd, the fool and the wise man, even.”   ~ Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605 ~

Good, refreshing sleep is essential for optimal health. However, sleep difficulties occur in about 75% of the population.  Although a short-lived bout of insomnia is generally not worrisome, chronic sleep loss can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure, weight gain, impaired learning and memory, mood disorders and cardiovascular issues.  Sleep deprivation can also lead to chronic degenerative disease by altering immune function.  There is evidence that insomnia is linked to early death and serious declines in quality of life.  Safety may also be a concern since sleep debt can cause lapses in alertness leading to mistakes, such as medical errors, traffic accidents and other work accidents. Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety and tension account for about 50% of insomnia.  However, dietary and lifestyle factors can also play a major role.  Sanoviv recommends trying natural sleep remedies as outlined below prior to considering prescription sleep aids.

A number of aspects of your health and quality of life are linked to sleep, and these aspects are impaired when you are sleep deprived.

Your Learning, Memory, and Mood

Students who have trouble grasping new information or learning new skills are often advised to “sleep on it,” and that advice seems well founded. Recent studies reveal that people can learn a task better if they are well rested. They also can better remember what they learned if they get a good night’s sleep after learning the task than if they are sleep deprived. Exactly what happens during sleep to improve our learning, memory, and insight isn’t known.  Experts suspect, however, that while people sleep, they form or strengthen the pathways of brain cells needed to perform these tasks. This process may explain why sleep is needed for proper brain development in infants.

Not only is a good night’s sleep required to form new learning and memory pathways in the brain, but sleep is also necessary for those pathways to work well. Several studies show that lack of sleep causes thinking processes to slow down. Lack of sleep also makes it harder to focus and pay attention. Lack of sleep can make you more easily confused. Studies also find that a lack of sleep leads to faulty decision making and more risk taking. A lack of sleep slows down your reaction time, which is particularly important to driving and other tasks that require quick responses. The bottom line is: Not getting a good night’s sleep can be dangerous!

Even if you don’t have a mentally or physically challenging day ahead of you, you should still get enough sleep to put yourself in a good mood.  Most people report being irritable, or downright unhappy, when they lack sleep. People who chronically suffer from a lack of sleep, either because they do not spend enough time in bed or because they have an untreated sleep disorder, are at greater risk of developing depression. Some experts think depression after childbirth (postpartum blues) is caused, in part, by a lack of sleep.

Tips for Improved Sleep

Your diet can play a role in the quality of your sleep.  For example, the quality of sleep may be affected if your body is working hard to digest food rather than preparing for cellular repair and the next day’s energy needs. Therefore, be sure to eat at least 3 hours prior to your sleep time.  Here are a few additional dietary tips:

  • Limit your intake of caffeine, including coffee, soda, tea, hot cocoa and chocolate. Caffeine can sometimes peak up to 18 hours after ingestion.
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol intake, especially prior to sleep. Alcohol impairs serotonin production and disrupts normal levels of this important neurotransmitter, making sleep more difficult.
  • Avoid drinking too much water or tea close to bedtime to prevent night-time urination.

Make your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep.  Avoid eating, watching television, or working in your bedroom. Be sure your room is dark, clean, quiet and comfortable.  It is important to have a comfortable mattress and pillow for good structural alignment during sleep.  Note: Sanoviv recommends a natural memory foam mattress. In terms of biomechanics, memory foam is best but the most common memory foam is highly toxic and made with petroleum-based chemicals. Since you sleep and breathe the fumes for 7-9 hours in a row, it is important to make a safer decision about the toxicity of your mattress. One company that makes the world’s only natural memory foam mattress is called Essentia. You can find their products on http://www.myessentia.com

While creating a healthy bedroom for sleep, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Move your clock out of sight during the night.  Waking up and looking at the clock can produce anxiety and prevent sleep.
  • Clear your nightstand of any electronic gadgets such as cell phones, cordless phones, chargers and alarm clocks.  Blue light displays and other electronics can interfere with sleep.
  • Regular daily, moderate physical activity is known to improve sleep.
  • Avoid excessive exercise or stimulating activities too close to bedtime.  Even a stimulating television show or movie or a stressful phone call can affect sleep quality. Be sure to allow your body and mind plenty of time to “wind down” prior to sleep.
  • Maintain a bedtime routine and do the same relaxing activities each night.  Go to bed and rise in the morning the same time every day, including weekends.
  • Get checked for sleep apnea disorders which can interfere with quality sleep.
  • Gentle stretching before bed may help improve sleep.
  • Consider chiropractic care to help balance the nervous system and assist with any structural alignment issues.

How Stress Affects Sleep

Insomnia has a strong link with and is often rooted in how we handle stress in our life. Sometimes insomnia lasts just a few days, other times it can persist for months or years, depending on how well we deal with stress and if the stressful situations in our life are within the bounds of what we can handle in a healthy way.  This can create a state where we are unable to “shut off” our minds at night and think, worry or ponder about things, instead of relaxing into sleep and rest which our body might sorely need. Once you have eliminated other contributing factors to insomnia, like certain foods, activities and medications, you can focus on creating sleep rituals that can support deeper, more restful sleep. Practice deep breathing, meditation or centered prayer.  Listen to a relaxing audio tape with sounds of nature or soothing music or a guided meditation. If this does not work, get up and go do something else until you feel sleepy and try again.

When sleep loss due to insomnia is a chronic, pervasive condition, it is highly recommended that you see a mental health professional or sleep disorder specialist to seek more comprehensive solutions.

Lessons Learned at Sanoviv

Productivity Consultant Sheila Green with Sanoviv's President, Elaine Pace onsite at Sanoviv

Many thanks to Sheila Green, celebrated speaker, productivity consultant, and Sanoviv guest for this heartfelt and educational post.  Read Sheila’s article in WomenEntrepreneur for more about her Sanoviv experience.

If we pay attention, sometimes we are fortunate to experience wake-up calls that will impact the rest of our lives. The answers are usually already in our conscious realm but we choose to block them out with noise and clutter of things we think are important.

When I arrived at Sanoviv, I was suffering from excruciating back pain. Through years of therapy, adjustments and painful injections I had grown accustomed to never-ending pain. What happened over the next seven days is stuff of which movies are made. Had it not been a personal experience, I don’t know if I would believe it.

Lesson 1 – Treat the cause, not the symptoms. In our day-to-day lives, we spend so much time and energy on superficial quick fixes, but the pain always comes back. Sanoviv’s Dr. Mercado made me wonderfully uncomfortable when he continued to probe the true cause of my pain. He was not amused or put off with my quick, flippant answers. By focusing on the cause of my pain we unlocked what was holding me back and only then could we start treatment that offered sustainable relief and a healthy future.

Lesson 2 – Unplug and de-stress. I was told my back pain was from a car accident. Doctors in the USA were baffled. They had done all they could and no one could figure out why I was in so much pain. As it turns out, a great deal of my pain was a result of an inordinate amount of stress. Stress that I disguised as daily life. When I cut off television, radio, my computer, my phone, coffee, wine and junk food, I honestly thought I was having a nervous breakdown. I secretly contacted my husband in Florida demanding that he come and rescue me! After a day or two of thorough cleansing, awesome food, and nurturing spa treatments I was able to enjoy experiences that I hadn’t felt in too many years to count. Experiences such as simple and meaningful conversations, playing in the pools under a full moon, walking on the grass and the experience of connecting with something bigger than yourself. Most of us can’t live in a disconnected society but what I learned was how constant connectivity was negatively impacting my life and my health and how was stress I was putting on myself to be Super Woman. I know where I was before I went to Sanoviv, wired and stressed to the point of no return and I will never allow myself to feel that way again. The key is knowing when to disconnect and then really doing it.

Lesson 3 – Be Open to New Experiences When you are truly looking for advice, techniques or treatment that will enhance your quality of life, it is vital to be open to new experiences. We’ve become so entrenched in our day to day routines, I felt as if I were sleepwalking through life. Change is often scary, often we feel worse before we feel better. (And sometimes we call Florida in a panic!) Knowing the range of emotions the guests could be experiencing, the staff at Sanoviv go out of their way to be personable, helpful and above all – encouraging and motivational. They were amazing on so many levels.  When I was able to let go of my control issues, I was open to hear, see and live new experiences at Sanoviv that made me see and enjoy the world in a whole new way.

PS – It’s been almost a year since my stay at Sanoviv and I am still pain-free!  Unbelievable, I know, but it is my truth.

Release your facial stress now

Tunnel, Lights, Action!

The following is a repost of a guest entry on the Everyday Inspirations blog.  Enjoy!

Your face is the first place someone’s eyes rest when they meet you.  It is the mirror of your internal experiences – housing your smile, tears, and the words you use to communicate with others.

Your face is also a primary resting place for stress.  To keep your smile genuine and your brow unfurrowed, try this easy exercise.

Rest all four of your fingertips on your cheekbones, feeling the beautiful structure of your face.  Press in – hard.  S-L-O-W-L-Y drag your fingers toward your scalp, up over your ears, and come to rest at the spot in your upper neck where your spine meets your skull.  Keep up the pressure, and bring your hands down the side of your neck, over your shoulders, and brush that stress off your pecs and into the universe.  You do not need to carry it around with you.

Try this movement three times, inhaling deeply as you move your hands, exhaling completely as you brush off the tension.  Inhale peace.  Exhale stress.  And when you’re done, close your eyes, tilt your head up, and envision that light at the end of the tunnel.  It IS there, and you will reach it.

At Sanoviv, we would love to be the light at the end of your tunnel.  Browse our programs or sign up for a free, no obligation medical consultation with one of our treating physicians today.

The Cycle of Fat

From Sanoviv’s free webcast, “Hormones and Weight Gain”, featuring Dr. Armony on March 1, 2011.

Chronic stress leads to:

  • Increase in body production of the hormone cortisol and insulin … Which…
  • Increases appetite … Which…
  • Increases the risk that you will not choose ideal, healthy nutrition for your body.  Instead you reach for high calorie, high fat foods … Which…
  • Makes you store more fat … Which…
  • Pumps more chemicals to the liver … Which…
  • Creates insulin resistance … Which…
  • Makes your pancreas secrete more insulin to compensate … Which…
  • Makes you hungrier….. Which…
  • Continues this vicious cycle and often leads to more inflammation and illness.

What to do:

  1. Omega 3 fatty acids
  2. Green Tea
  3. Turmeric
  • Breathe.  Deeply and often. In a way that reduces your stress.  Believe that you can live a productive life without chronic stress – and find a way to make that happen.
