Eat Your Way to Healthy Joints

Eat Your Way to Healthy Joints

Joint pain is no fun and can keep you from enjoying an active lifestyle. It is possible to eat your way to healthy joints and decrease inflammation and joint pain. Your joints, much like your body, require nutrients in order to repair and keep cells, ligaments, muscles and cartilage healthy. So investigate what you are putting on your fork and get ready to eat your way to healthier joints.

Go raw! Okay, you do not have to become a raw food activist in order to eat healthier. You do however, want to increase your daily intake of raw veggies as they are loaded with enzymes that can help break down nutrients in your food so that they can be used by your body.

Essential fatty acids found in nuts and seeds and their oil along with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in cold water fish is a must for well-lubricated healthy joints. Fatty acids can reduce swelling and discomfort in joints as well provide proper lubrication.

Foods such as nuts, seeds, salmon, sardines and vegetables such as cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and other green veggies such as collard and turnip greens, spinach, kale and green beans are an excellent source of essential fatty acids.

Good collagen production is essential to joint health. Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein made up of amino acids found in bones, muscles, body tissues, tendons and cartilage.Collagen comprises approximately one quarter of all of the protein in your body.  Collagen is important in avoiding osteoarthritis. One of the first indications of osteoarthritis development is the loss or breakdown of collagen.

Eating protein-rich foods can help boost collagen production because they are good sources of amino acids. Look for quality pasture and humane raised animal sources. Vegetable protein sources include nuts, seeds, legumes beans and some grains such as quinoa.

Quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid compound that is a natural anti-inflammatory.  Apples, red or black grapes, blueberries, blackberries, cherries and green teas are rich in quercetin.

Although you can eat your way to better joint health sometimes the food you choose could be the culprit to your pain. Even worse, if you are experiencing intestinal permeability (or leaky gut) this may lead to unexplained joint pain. Take for instance gluten. Most humans lack the enzymes to completely break down gluten; at best it is only partially digested. If this happens it can lead to undigested peptides instigating inflammation. If there is any intestinal permeability undigested fragments can seep through and over time may lead to increased inflammation in weak areas, in this case the joints.

At Sanoviv Medical Institute we use advanced testing for when it comes to gluten. We use the Array 3 Antibody Wheat and Gluten Proteome Reactivity and AutoimmunityTM test. With this test we are able to measure antibody production against 9 wheat proteins and peptides and 3 essential structure enzymes. Any of these antigens has the capacity to challenge the immune system even when there are no digestive symptoms present.  In other words, most think of gluten as causing digestive problems. Not so. Gluten can affect the brain, skin and immune system.

At Sanoviv we also advise if testing for the Array 3 to also test with the Array 4 Antibody Gluten-Associated Cross Reactive Foods and Food SensitivityTM test. Sometimes removing gluten may not be enough to healthy joints and other body complaints. This is where the Array 4 may help.

Most countries define gluten-free products based on the recommendation of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and World Health Organization. This codex alimentarius allows the inclusion of up to 0.3% protein from gluten containing grains in foods labeled gluten-free.  If the sensitive body is exposed to 0.3% protein, the immune system will recognize and react to the protein.[1] The Array 4 tests for 27 foods (including healthy foods) that may be an underlying culprit to true health and wellness. The Array 4 can assist by detecting both sensitivities and cross-reactions that may possibly allow for a possible continued gluten-like reaction.  In other words, if you have gotten off of gluten and you are still having symptoms it could be something you are consuming that is causing the inflammatory response to continue and aggravate.

Joint pain can be a common symptom of many diseases or a reminder from a past injury. Always pay attention when it comes to joint pain.  Seek the advice of your physician or qualified health care practitioner so that you can rule out any unforeseeable problems. At Sanoviv we have many programs to suit your needs. Your body has the power to heal and it starts with learning all you can to prevent injury and provide your body with the right nutrients to help in the healing process.

Continually Fan the Flames of your Intention

When it comes to getting results with your health thought and action are necessary. A thought can inspire, “what if?” Analysis of the thought leads to “I wonder.” This in turn, both physically motivates you to act and allows for the manifestation of the thought. But, sometimes your little voice takes over and talks you out of acting on a potentially great idea.

Thoughts are inspirations that with the right mindset can manifest into physical goals. Every year we make a conscious decision to elevate our business, or become better at something, or to achieve better health.
What are your thoughts surrounding the accomplishment of your goal? Are they positive burning desires that motivate you to stay focused? Or, are they thoughts of never amounting to anything? Followed by, a self-unworthiness perception of “why bother as it will just be like everything else; nothing ever goes my way.”
You have the power to take your thoughts and allow them to become your motivational tool to succeed in all of your goals and desires. You have the power to elevate your goals and aspirations. Take your thoughts and make them so. It is that easy.

Here at Sanoviv Medical Institute we have many medical programs that include a visit with the psychology department. We do this purposefully because our mind body and soul are connected. If the doctors are working physically to make a person well but that person does not believe they are worthy of wellness, or are in fear of wellness, or doesn’t believe they can heal; those thoughts become more powerful than the medicine.
Do you have a health intention? Revisit your goal. Where are you at with the goal? Take your goal of health and turn it into an intention and make the intention your primary focus. Write out what it is that you need to allow for this intention to be achieved. Do not hold back; write out what it will take, even if you do not have the resources (such as the financial well being) currently to believe that it could be possible. To make it simpler, if you could wave a magic wand to grant your wish what would it be and what do you need?
A thought does not allow for the physical constraints of “can’t”. What we think, we have the ability to manifest physically. Our vibrational energy synchs with the energy of the resources we need to make it so.

If this has not happened for you yet take a look at how you are feeling towards this intentional goal. What are your thoughts? Are they positive or negative? Do you have faith to put your need, want or desire out to the Universe and know that it will be taken care of? Or is your little voice thinking through all the items keeping you from this goal?
The law of the Universe is to provide what we need if we feel we are worthy of that desire, passion or goal. It is quite simple, and yet we make it so difficult. It is a leap of faith to put trust into what we cannot see. If you allow the Universe to act upon your intention, the messages will come, but it is up to you to allow yourself to see the messages. To allow the connection you must clear your thoughts of all physical constrains and make yourself open and ready to receive Universal messages that will bring you what you need to accomplish your goal.

Our body, mind and spirit follow natural spiritual law. We need to connect with our earth in order to become grounded and connected with the present moment. Being grounded allows you to become spiritually connected to the Universal vibration and allows for intention.

How you become grounded is by walking barefoot on Mother Earth. Here at Sanoviv we have beautiful luscious green grass and you will see many people walking barefoot in the grass. We actually hold classes where you walk barefoot in the grass to ground your energy and well being.
Take a walk barefoot in the sand, dirt or grass. Hike into the woods or desert and become aware of the stillness. Listen to the breeze, smell the air and be grateful for the connection. Connecting with nature allows for realignment of your intentions and your desire.

When you feel your goal slipping away you have two choices, either refuel with positive intention, or give up. But before you give up ask yourself this, “How has giving up worked for me in the past? Did it help me to ascertain my goals, aspirations and desires?” The answer will be no every time. We cannot make conscious intention and then expect it to arrive on our threshold the next day especially with negative thoughts or feeling unworthy of the goal. It takes time and when the time, space and sequence are right, it will manifest.

You have the choice to allow your surroundings to physically and spiritually affect your flow of intention. They can continually fan the flames of your goals and desires. We are all faced with situations, critical moments and physical blocks that may hindered our goals. Do not allow this to break the connection of your intentions. Keep in mind they too are a moment in time and shall soon pass. Keep your intention and passion every day, feel the emotions of your goal. Take me- time, down time, laugh, have fun and refuel and connect with your higher vibration. The intention lies within you to make it so. When you reach your goal, repeat this process and make it so.

Summer Fun Food

By Karen Langston

The last of the lilacs fragrance waft in the cool, late-spring air, the tulips are withering away and jasmine fills the night. The lazy-filled days of summer, which include barbeques, picnics and beach day get-togethers, are finally here. Food is an integral component of our summertime activities.

Here are 3 strategies to eat healthy and still enjoy all of summer’s privileges.

Barbeque Essentials

Meat is the bulk of summer food consumption.  The average American consumes 250 pounds of meat each year.  Whether scarfing down a frankfurter at the ball game or cooking them up on the barbeque, look for all beef hotdogs that are sodium nitrite and nitrate free.  Nitrites, nitrates (sodium nitrites, sodium nitrates) are what give chicken and beef hotdogs, luncheon and deli meats, as well as bacon and ham, their pink color and, to some extent, their flavoring. They are also preservatives and antimicrobial agents which serve to cure meats. There are numerous studies which question the safeness of these preservatives. Nitrites mix with stomach gastric juices and convert to nitrosamines which, some studies have linked to an increase in gastrointestinal cancers. Not to put a damper on a summer fling, choose nitrite and nitrate free luncheon meats and hotdogs to help you prepare the healthiest summertime barbeque.

A picnic or a barbeque is not complete without condiments. Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and relish are the top condiments of choice to complement the summer chef’s array of food. Use organic condiments as they will be free of most harmful preservatives. Most importantly, they will not contain high fructose corn syrup.  High fructose corn syrup is a well known, and not very well understood, ingredient. Researchers are continuously debating its safety. Here is what we do know; high fructose corn syrup is metabolized differently than sugar and consumption in high amounts presents certain metabolic and hormonal affects that lead to fat storage and weight gain. Look for condiments that are free from high fructose corn syrup, artificial ingredients, dyes and preservatives such as BHT and sulfites.

Hydration is important year-round, but extremely importantly during the summer months. Water is by far the number one choice for hydration. Water lubricates your joints, helps you think clearly and gives you energy to participate in summertime activities. When indulging in other summer-favorite beverages such as ice tea, opt to make your own. When I was growing up, summer meant glass pitchers of iced tea and sliced lemons sitting out in the sun on our back porch. I could not wait to quench my thirst with my Mum’s homemade ice tea with a hint of honey sweetness. Brewing your own beverage allows you to control sweetness with quality sweeteners such as stevia or raw honey.  Avoid sugary drinks and colas as much as possible. Not only do they lack nutritional value, the caffeine causes dehydration and there are too many conflicting reports about the safety of Aspartame and Nutrasweet. There are many natural and chemical free alternatives to conventional sugar-filled, chemical-laden sodas such as Virgil and Blue Sky.

Having a natural soda or a homemade iced tea are OK once in a while however, it is better to stick to water and you can have some fun with the help of fresh fruit. You can make your own flavoured water with fruit, herbs and a glass jug. Take any fruit and some herbs like berries and mint; add to a jug of water and let it sit over night. The flavours will merry with water and infuse the yumminess into the water. You can lightly mash the fruit the next day to add even more flavor.

We all look forward to summer time fun. Making wise choices means you can still eat what you want but better. It is not about taking away the bad foods, it is about upgrading to better quality foods. Choose non genetically modified fed meat, poultry and eggs that were humanely and pastured raised so that, you can take in the most nutrients to run your body properly. Not to mention feeling good knowing that an animal did not suffer. And, there are no added hormones and antibiotics being served at your summer time feast.

When it comes to condiments choose organic so that there will be no hidden worries. You do not need food coloring, additives or preservatives on your food.

Upgrade sugar and chemically laden sodas and teas for either homemade versions or organic versions with better quality ingredients. Water of course is the best hydration so be sure to drink plenty.

Enjoy your summer festivities, naturally and organically. As we say here at Sanoviv provecho which means enjoy your meal.

At Sanoviv, we see the importance of a balanced approach to cancer therapies. Not All standard treatments are bad and not all alternative treatments are good. In fact, we believe it is important to incorporate the best of each approach into an integrative therapy. Many of our natural and biological therapies have their roots in Europe where they have been practiced for many decades.

Our integrative form of oncology uses many traditional modalities such as high does vitamin C, Laetrile (B17), homeopathy and intravenous ozone therapy in combination with medical procedures such as regional hypothermia, hyperbaric oxygen and sometimes surgery (when indicated) to help our guests win the battle against cancer. Some of our guests chose to undergo chemotherapy at other facilities and come to Sanoviv for additional supportive therapies.

Our 5-part approach to overcoming cancer includes:

Detoxification involves removal of harmful substances from the body which is continually confronted with toxins. These toxins are found in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, in our clothes, in furniture and even in our mouth as dental toxins. In order to optimize the immune system response and reduce side effects of treatment, the body needs to be free of heavy metals and toxins. At Sanoviv, you are in a completely toxin-free environment to optimize healing. A detox regimen including calcium EDTA and other biological substances may be used to help the body rid itself of toxins, improving metabolic function. Dental treatment may be needed to eliminate additional sources of toxins.

Immune Modulation therapy brings the ratio of different types of immune cells back into balance so that they can perform their critical function to search, detect, and destroy foreign or diseased cells. Balancing the immune system is much better than simply stimulating the immune system (which could cause it to overreact and attack healthy cells). Restoring healthy immune function is especially important for those with cancer.

At Sanoviv, we accomplish this by administering Transfer Factors. These are very small molecules, found in all species, that help cells to communicate with and identify one another. Transfer Factors are polypeptides (44 amino acids). Because of their small size (less than 5kDa), they do not trigger allergic reactions. They work by modulating TH1-TH2 helper cells and cytokines, improving the body’s ability to detect fungi, parasites, intracellular organisms, viruses, and cancer. Transfer factors also have the ability to suppress an overreacting immune system.

The use of Transfer Factors to balance and restore immune function is backed by 25 years of research and clinical experience. Recent discoveries include more powerful Transfer Factors extracted from the spleen of crocodiles and sharks. Correcting immune defects and imbalances can improve outcomes for cancer patients.

Substitution involves giving the body the substances it needs to regain health. We apply orthomolecular medicine, which uses vitamins, minerals and amino acids to promote health and healing in the body. High intravenous doses of these substances show a pharmaceutical effect and can have an immediate impact on the immune system and metabolism. Since the days of Linus Pauling, orthomolecular medicine has been traditionally used in biological oncology to reduce tumor size, kill cancer cells, curb the spread of cancer and improve the quality of life.

We use different therapeutic interventions to enhance your body’s ability to destroy cancer cells, while respecting the integrity of normal, healthy cells. These are done in conjunction with other therapies to synergize their potency while diminishing side effects. Regional hyperthermia is used to heat up tumor material causing its metabolism to break down. Tumors do not tolerate temperatures over 41 degrees centigrade. Because of their primitive blood supply, tumors are not able to easily divert heat. The metabolism of tumor cells is different to that of healthy cells. This makes them a target for regional hyperthermia. This therapy is used in combination with other modalities such as high dose vitamin C, laetrile (B17), hyperbaric oxygen and orthomolecular medicine.

Our psychologists help guide guests toward recognizing patterns in their lives that may have made them susceptible to cancer. This may include providing solutions for stress management and lifestyle coaching. Through different forms of bodywork and mind-body healing, inner balance is increased, internal stress is released and the self-healing powers of the body are stimulated.

Healthy Sugars

By Oscar Puig CN

All sugar is similar to us in taste, but is there such a thing as a healthy sugar?
Glucose, or sugar, is a vital component of our daily diet. It contributes one of the largest sources of energy to our body, including our brain. There are many natural sugars that also provide essential nutrients such as B complex vitamins and iron, but this doesn’t mean that we are going to eat them abundantly. The same nutrients can be found in other foods. For example, vegetables are an excellent source of sugars/carbohydrates but will not stress our system by giving a quick blood sugar response and they provide more nutrients. Like many other food categories all sweeteners are not created equal. It is important to know the healthier choices for sugar and sweeteners, and to understand their benefits.

The average American consumes a total of 130 pound of sugar per year, which is equal to 140 grams per day that equals  to 3 cans of soda per day. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 9 teaspoons per day, but the reality is that an average adult consumes 22 teaspoons per day while the average child consumes up to 32 teaspoons per day.  It is not hard to understand why the US leads the world in childhood obesity according to the OECD. Other neighboring countries are imitating the US and following closely behind. Mexico is second in the world and Canada is eleventh with respect to childhood obesity rates. Children with a high consumption of sugary soft drinks are more likely to be overweight. Currently, more than one-third of US adults are obese; and obesity related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer are among the leading causes of preventable death.
According to Dr. Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist at the University of California in San Francisco, an obesity expert and author of – Fat Chance, sugar, processed food, obesity and disease-, “Food was just as abundant before obesity’s ascendance. The problem is the increase in sugar consumption. Sugar drives fat storage and makes the brain think it is hungry, setting up a “vicious cycle.”

Sugars are found in whole foods in the form of simple glucose, fructose and galactose such as those found in dietary carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits and grains. These are classified has monosaccharides. They are easy to digest and fast to get to our blood stream. They are packed with nutrients and beneficial fiber because they come from whole foods. However, our food industry has created non-nourishing natural and artificial sweeteners that can be damaging to the body. The best examples of this would be processed sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (“natural” sweeteners) and sucralose and aspartame (artificial sweeteners). Although naturally-derived, sucrose and high fructose corn syrup present in most processed foods can increase the probability of impaired liver function and fat deposits (fatty liver). Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver disease is quickly becoming epidemic in our society, especially among young adults. Artificial sweeteners, such as sucralose (Splenda™) and aspartame (Equal™) are neurotoxic (toxic to brain cells) and can also create problems in the body, such as migraine headaches, seizures, memory loss and weight gain, just to name a few. A comprehensive review on the dangers of artificial sweeteners is provided in the book Sweet Deception, by Joseph Mercola D.O.
In any chronic, degenerative disease condition, such as diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, heart disease or cancer, the best advice is to avoid all processed sugars and artificial sweeteners. It is sometimes difficult to remove all of these from your diet so you may wonder what sugars are acceptable in small amounts?

, a plant extract, is considered one the best natural sugar substitutes on the market.  It is much sweeter than table sugar and you can cook with this plant extract. Since it does not have an impact on blood sugar, it is one of the best options for those with diabetes, insulin resistance, and problems with Candida yeast.
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol derived from many sources such as fiber from fruits and vegetables, corn husks sugar cane and birch. It has a sweetness that is comparable to table sugar. It has a negligible impact on blood sugar, contains very few calories and it has many health benefits. Xylitol helps to fight cavities, re-mineralize teeth and is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal. You can also cook with it but be aware that some people are sensitive to Xylitol and it can produce bloating, gas or diarrhea if ingested in higher amounts.
Raw Honey is considered to be a super-food because of its high content of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients. It has been used for centuries for healing different ailments and is widely known for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Raw honey is also rich in prebiotics (friendly bacteria) that can help to maintain a healthy intestinal environment. Since it may impact blood sugar, it should be consumed in moderation and may not be appropriate for diabetics.
Coconut palm sugar is made from the sap of coconut palms trees. It is rich in minerals compared to brown sugar and is a natural source of B-complex vitamins.  Preliminary research shows this sugar has a low to moderate effect on blood sugar, but overall is quite healthy in moderate amounts.
Amasake is most common in Asian countries. This sugar alternative is made from fermented whole brown rice and brown rice Koji. It is ideal for people with digestive issues; since it is found in a predigested form, containing a rich amount of active enzymes. It is a good source of B-complex vitamins and minerals, has a pudding-like consistency and is ideal for children. Since it may have an impact on blood sugar, it may not be appropriate for everyone. It is also not widely accessible in the US.
Organic Sugar is grown without the use of any pesticide or chemical and comes from organic sugar cane. It is naturally darker than refined sugar, meaning beneficial nutrients have not been stripped away. The darker color shows that it still contains small amounts of molasses. Organic sugar should be used only in moderation.
Blackstrap molasses is the unprocessed part of white sugar. This is the part that contains all the beneficial nutrients, including minerals like Iron and Calcium. It is alkalizing for the body and adds wonderful flavor to foods such as soups. It has a higher sugar rating than the other natural sugars and should only be consumed as organic.

You will find a wide variety of sweeteners in the marketplace. They can be found in processed foods as an ingredient, or promoted as “the next best thing.” Be sure to do your homework when you come upon a sweetener with which you are unfamiliar.  Keep in mind, even the “healthier” sugars may cause problems if consumed in excess.  For best results, keep a variety of healthy sugars on hand, rotate them within your diet and consume all sugars in moderation.

The Importance of Cholesterol by Alberto Isaac Meza MD

Cholesterol is a vital molecule, without which all of us would die.  It has been demonized by the makers of statin drugs and as a result, most people have become conditioned to avoid foods containing cholesterol. This is a big mistake that can place a bigger burden on the body since cholesterol supports the body’s needs. It helps us to make Vitamin D, sex hormones, and steroid hormones.  It is also essential to all of our cell membranes and important to the brain for nerve signal function. It also plays a role in the metabolism of fats and our immune defenses. Therefore suppressing or avoiding cholesterol can deprive us of several important nutrients and impair many body functions.

Here at Sanoviv we recognize the importance of cholesterol as a remarkable and necessary substance.
The cholesterol-heart disease theory is a myth, and there are many studies that actually support this fact. We also improve the body’s utilization of this important nutrient that is mainly made in the liver, although some is obtained from food. Cholesterol is not the big elephant in the room; it is not the underlying cause of the #1 killer in the world (heart disease).  What really contributes to the world epidemic of cardiovascular disease is oxidized cholesterol or small density cholesterol molecules in addition to sugar, inflammation from gastrointestinal tract, dental inflammation (gums) as well as toxicity and heavy metals.

It is important to reduce cardiovascular risk, but focusing on cholesterol is not the answer. At Sanoviv we reduce risk by using nutrients and educating about diet and lifestyle.  Our focus includes the following tips:

  • Improve blood vessel health by using a combination of magnesium, activated folic acid, B-complex vitamins, balanced essential fatty acids, L-arginine and other key nutrients.
  • The best way to improve your body’s utilization of cholesterol is by using balanced essential fatty acids, fermented garlic, Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, chromium, curcumin, quercetin, niacin, vitamin E, and resveratrol.
  • Support the liver which is where most blood cholesterol is produced.  A good liver formula includes nutrients such as milk thistle, N-acetyl-cysteine, alpha lipoic acid and turmeric.
  • Reduce stress and practice regular physical activity and breathing exercises. Spend time outdoors.
  • Eat healthy cholesterol-enriched foods like eggs, liver and oysters along with fermented foods such as yogurt and fermented vegetables. Eat sulfur rich foods like garlic and onions. Avoid sugar and hydrogenated oils (most processed foods) and drink plenty of pure water.

Sanoviv recommends the following books to help you better understand the importance of cholesterol and the myths surrounding the use of drug therapy for the prevention of heart disease:

Franken-grains (genetically modified grains)

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences discusses the potential to genetically modify different varieties of wheat to contain less immune stimulating glutens (prolamins) for patients diagnosed with gluten sensitivity or Celiac disease.

Is this dangerous?  If we look at other examples of genetic manipulation to grains and damage now being linked to them, the answer is yes.  The problem with genetically modified foods is that they have never been adequately studied to be safe.  There are too many unforeseeable consequences, and there is no way to adequately determine safety in humans without performing long term comprehensive research with humans.  Most likely, introducing a new species of grain into an already sick population will create many more problems than solutions.  Some research links the cross breading of wheat to the increased gluten toxicity that we currently face.

Wheat supplies about 20% of the total food calories consumed worldwide; and is a national staple in many countries. Besides being a key source of plant proteins, it is also a major cause of many diet-induced health issues, especially Celiac disease. The only effective treatment for this disease is a total gluten-free diet.

Looking Beyond Gluten – Genetically Modified Foods

In recent years, the popularity of the gluten free diet is definitely on the rise.  One of the reasons why it works well is because so many people are gluten sensitive; but are there other reasons why going on a TRUE gluten free diet can be so helpful?  The following is a list of additional reasons why a gluten free diet can be beneficial:

  1. A TRUE gluten free diet eliminates all grains and therefore eliminates a bulk of genetically hybridized and modified forms of food from the diet.
  2. Eliminating gluten/grain reduces the dietary exposure to toxic fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides.  Many of these chemicals are known to contribute to autoimmune disease and hormone disruption.
  3. Eliminating gluten/grain improves the omega 3 to omega 6 balance in the body – this balance regulates the process of inflammation and has a profound effect on joint and muscle pain.
  4. Eliminating gluten/grain reduces the quantity of digestive resistant lectins.  Many of these food compounds hinder digestion and contribute to inflammatory reactions in the body.
  5. Eliminates multiple chemical additives.  Most grain products contain a laundry list of ingredients that are not suitable for human health.
  6. Eliminates excessive carbohydrate consumption.  The human body is not designed to run on a high carbohydrate diet.  One of the major reasons we see obesity and diabetes increasing in epic fashion is the hyper consumption of grain based carbohydrate foods.  Despite popular belief, excessive grain consumption will not reduce your risk of heart disease.

Why do we assume that grain is such a healthy food?

The Food Guide Pyramid recommends large quantities of grain as a staple food in the diet. Why? Did you know that the U.S. Government mandated that processed grain products be fortified with vitamins and minerals in 1943? The reason? Processed grains caused nutritional diseases like Beri Beri and Pellagra (vitamin B1 and B3 deficiency respectively).

Detrimental Qualities of Grain (Including Whole Grain)

  • The seeds are doused with chemical hormones and pesticides like atrazine to aid in growth. These chemicals mimic estrogen and cause hormone disruption in both men and women.
  • Low in the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA (omega 3)
  • Poor source of complete protein
  • Contain enzyme inhibitors
  • Contains addictive proteins that can alter behavior, mood, and contribute to mental dysfunction
  • Contain anti nutrients that cause malabsorption of minerals
  • Contain autoimmune inducing peptides and lectins
  • Cause sodium and water retention
  • Cause excessive insulin response leading to weight gain and diabetes.

But Our Children Eat Grain –

  • Breakfast = Cereal, donuts, bagels, cereal bars, tortillas, toast, pancakes, etc.
  • Lunch = Sandwich breads and other types of “buns”, and whole grain crackers
  • Dinner = Pasta, pizza, breaded chicken fingers, hamburgers, etc
  • Snacks = Goldfish, whole grain crackers, drinks and fruit snacks loaded with corn syrup (yes, corn is a grain – not a vegetable).

Our children are fatter and sicker than they have ever been. According to statistics and recent published studies, half of kids today are overweight.

What Can You Do?

  • Become educated and make healthy diet changes for you and your family today.

Flossing Before Brushing?

by Abdiel Marquez DDS, Sanoviv Dental

Did you know? Flossing before brushing gives you an opportunity to clear out the space between teeth, which will allow the toothpaste to do its job more thoroughly. Furthermore, it loosens all of the food particles and bacteria that will be washed away while brushing and rinsing.

However, the real concern is whether or not you floss. Most people have been instructed to floss after brushing and this is much better than not flossing at all. This will remove food particles and bacteria from your teeth that have just been brushed clean, which is why flossing before brushing makes good sense.

Rinsing first

Rinsing before you floss and brush loosens food particles and buildup, making brushing even more effective.

Don’t leave your toothbrush in the bathroom

The odors in the bathroom are ferments, vapors, bacteria and viruses that come out from urine and feces all over the bathroom floating, seeking for a damp place to cultivate (toothbrushes bristles).

Recent studies have found the following bacteria in toothbrush bristles, which can be the cause of various stomach or intestinal illnesses:

Escherichia coli

Most people (7 of 10) leave their toothbrushes in the bathroom.  The toothbrush should be stored in a dry place outside the bathroom or covered with a suitable case.

Remember to brush a minimum of 2 times per day but preferably after each meal for optimal oral health.

We recommend PerioClear mouthwash (http://www.sanovivstore.com/perioclear–alcoholfree-mouthwash.html) and PerioScript concentrate for oral irrigators (http://www.sanovivstore.com/perioscript-oral-cleansing-concentrate.html)
