What is Colon Hydrotherapy ?

Colonics are an extended and more complete form of an enema. The process involves infusing warm filtered water into the rectum with the objective of cleansing and balancing the colon. Colonics help remove fecal material from the colon walls, and dilutes the bacterial toxin concentration in the large intestine. The therapeutic effects of this treatment are improved muscle tone, which helps facilitate the peristaltic action and enhances the absorption of toxic waste material. If we ask ourselves, “what happens with the waste material if we don’t get it out?” First, this material is quite toxic (poisonous). These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted material impairs the colons ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria-produced vitamins. A build-up of material on the colon wall can inhabit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation.

Common signs that you may have toxic material include:

*back aches

*bad breath

*body odor

*skin blemishes

*abdominal gas

*sciatic pain

*distention of the abdomen

If you are wondering how often you should have a colonic, it is important to know the objective of why you want them when working with the therapist.  For example, you want to remove a backache, headache, or recover from a flu, or even lower a fever, in these circumstances you may need only 1 or 2 treatments. However, if you would like to recover from having constipation problems, learn to create multiple daily bowel movements, or even achieve better health, then regular colonics may be beneficial. In addition, you should consider a change in your diet and exercise habits. The total number of colonics in your treatment plan depends on the condition of your body and how it responds to each treatment since each treatment will have different results.

Our colon is also populated with beneficial bacteria (flora) so some people often wonder if a colonic is harmful.  When you receive colonics, you wash-out the old material so you are helping to increase the intestinal flora, because healthy bacteria can only breathe in a clean environment. Probiotic or wheatgrass implants or oral supplements may be indicated to help re-populate the colon.  For example, a wheatgrass implant helps in the process of healing the intestinal flora. It acts as a detoxifying agent, purifying the blood, the liver, and is an excellent bowel cleanser. More importantly, it helps restore, balance and increase the intestinal flora.

A probiotic implant is also beneficial.  The term probiotic means “pro-life”. Probiotics are “live microorganisms which when administrated in adequate amounts they have a health benefit on the host.” Studies have shown that probiotics help restore and balance intestinal flora and regular use can strengthen the body’s natural defenses. Probiotics reach the intestines alive and transiently colonize the gut.  They improve intestinal function, improve the immune system and suppress the growth of pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria.

There are two different commercial colonic systems which are approved by the FDA. They accomplish the same thing such as injecting water into the colon and flushing out the waste, but they accomplish this in two different ways. Both systems have their proponents, and it often comes down to a personal preference, or simply the availability of one system or the other in areas where there are a limited number of colon therapy establishments. If you are planning on having a colonic in a new town or changing to a new therapist, you should ask what type of system they have when you call to make the appointment.

OPEN SYSTEM: The big brand name for this system is Libbe. The system consists of a large treatment “lounge” which is a molded reclined that is fitted with a sink where your bottom will end up. In the sink is a small pencil sized nozzle attached to a short flexible hose. You will disrobe from the waist down, and as you position yourself on the table, you will hold the nozzle in position, and slide yourself down onto it such that it enters your anus a couple of inches. You will then recline on the lounge, head on a pillow, and try to relax.

The therapist will turn on the warm water which will begin to gently enter your colon. When you feel full, or have the urge to eliminate, you simply release into the sink, a bit like being on the toilet. The nozzle stays in place and you simply evacuate around it. The drain plumbing is clear so you can look down beside you to see what has been discharged from your colon.  A small fan helps to remove odors.

The therapist may or may not stay with you depending upon the establishment. Some therapists will stay with you, massage your belly to help move the water around and dislodge the waste, and adjust the water temperature warmer and cooler to cause the bowels to move. Other places, you may be left alone to do your thing, and the therapist appears only if summoned or at the end of treatment. Again, this is a matter of personal preference. Some folks like to be pampered and attended to, while others prefer to be left alone.

CLOSED SYSTEM: This is what most people imagine when they think of a high colonic and the system used at Sanoviv. This system consists of a control box which is usually located near the end of a padded treatment table. The box contains water temperature and pressure controls, a “in” and “out” control valve, a lighted viewing tube to observe the waste, and various meters and gauges for the therapist to monitor the treatment.

You will disrobe from the waist down, and the therapist will normally have you lie on your side with your knees drawn up to get access to your anus. A large hollow nozzle will be fitted with a bullet-shaped insert to allow the tube to be inserted comfortably. The tube will be lubricated (and perhaps the therapist will insert a lubricated finger into your anus to lubricate it) and then pushed up against the anal opening. Some therapist will ask you to reach behind you and either insert the nozzle yourself, or help guide it into position. Other therapists will do for you. The nozzle, due to its size, is sometimes uncomfortable at first, but therapists are very skilled at making the insertion as comfortable as possible. The feeling of fullness will usually subside in a minute or two. The insert is then removed from the nozzle, and the hoses connected. There is a small clear hose for water being delivered into you, and a large tube for the waste. The colonic may be started on your side or your may be asked to turn on your back with your knees drawn up.

Warm water is then introduced into the colon. The therapist can tell when there is pressure in the colon from the gauges, or you may tell the therapist that you feel full. A valve is then opened and the waste is allowed to discharge through the viewing tube where you may examine what is being discharged. This process is repeated over and over for approximately 45 minutes under total control of the therapist.

Since the therapist has control of the filling and releasing of water, you have less control of the treatment. It is important to have confidence and trust in your therapist, since the therapist has control of your comfort. Safety is assured by controls on the machine, but your comfort is largely in the hands of your therapist. The closed treatment is usually highly effective whether you are experienced with colonics or not. Your therapist will most likely massage your belly and help manipulate the water into the deepest recesses of your colon.

Closed System Colonics, which our Hospital recommends, are performed with a disposable speculums and is used only once per patient, almost all our patients report this is a much more dignified and comfortable treatment compared to that of the open system method.

If you have the chance and the budget, I suggest you seek out and try both treatment systems and judge for yourself. You are certain to have a preference. To help you we will provide you with the website that has a way of helping you find a therapist, When you enter the website go ahead to Referrals, there you will enter the first three numbers of your zip code, which will provide you with the therapist most near your hometown.

Questions to ask a Colon Therapist

  1. How long have you been a therapist?
  2. Where were you trained?
  3. Do you use disposable equipment?
  4. Do you use implants?
  5. Do you do any massage?
  6. How long does a therapy take?
  7. How much do you charge?

Depending on where you live the average cost of a session is approximately $75 – $100 US dollars. Some places will give you a discount if you make appointments for a series.

Rebounding for fun and fitness!

By Ruben Guereña and Gerardo Lopez

Rebounding is one of the most fun classes we give at Sanoviv Medical Institute. Rebounding is an effective way to exercise that has many health benefits; includung weight loss, body toning, lowering cholesterol levels, helps to prevent heart disease, decreases your blood pressure, stimulates metabolism, aids your lymphatic system and a lot more.  If you want to read about how the lymphatic system and how it works, please click on the following link

By far the most important benefit that you can get by using a rebounder is that bouncing up and down makes you happy, and that is the best way to combat stress.

Important note:

Please make sure you have your doctor’s approval before you start any exercise program.
The following are just a few examples of the many exercises you can do on a rebounder.

As with any exercise routine, you should start with a warm up.

Health bounce (basic bounce)Stand in the center of the mini trampoline with feet slightly apart; always keeping your knees slightly bent. (See photo below)This will be your basic starting stance for all the exercises done on the rebounder. Do this exercise from 2 to 3 minutes.

Note: If you are a beginner, lightly bounce up and down making sure your feet do not lift off the rebounder mat and hold on to the stability bar for better balance. As you become used to the rebounder, you can lift your feet a couple of inches off the mat.

Exercise 1 (Cardio) As you can see in the photos, each time you bounce off the rebounder you alternate your feet placing one foot in front of the other. Do this exercise from 1 – 2 minutes.

Exercise 2 (Cardio)

Start out with your right arm out and feet shoulder width apart. As you bounce off the rebounder you bring your leg behind your back and touch your foot with your right hand (see photo) and go back to the starting position. Do this exercise from  1 – 2 minutes per opposite arm and leg. Make sure to work both arms and legs.

Exercise 3 (cardio)

Starting with the basic stance, lift your right arm to the side and bend at the elbow as shown. Lift your left knee and bring your bent right arm forward.

Cool Down
For the cool down, go back to the health bounce but make sure you do not bring your feet of the mat. Just move up and down very lightly. Do this until you feel your heart rate slow down.

Calf and hamstring stretch

Holding to the stability bar, place one foot in front with toes pointing up. Keep back foot flat and bend knee slightly and lean your weight back until you feel the stretch behind the leg. It is very important that you breathe normally during stretching to help your muscles relax. Stretch for 20 to 30 seconds and switch foot.

Quad stretch

For better stability hold on to the stability bar. Bend one leg and hold it as shown. Make sure your knees are close together (do not flare your knee). Breathe normally and release your leg after 20 or 30 seconds. Repeat on other leg.

Great job!

Well, this will be the last post for 2012; we hope that we were able to motivate you to GET STARTED on a path to a better mental and physical health. Remember that for exercise to show any results you have to take into consideration 4 things which are Duration, intensity, Frequency and Mode. I honestly think that for the first 3 to work, Mode has a big role in this. In other words, if you enjoy the activity you are doing you will stick to it. So choose wisely.

We want to hear from you. Let us know how we can help you to GET STARTED.

From the fitness team here at Sanoviv Medical Institute we want to wish you a safe and Happy Holidays and a New Year filled with prosperity and success.

 See you in 2013

Staying Young and Healthy

by Daniela Colin MD & Sue Ward, MS

Aging is a natural process that begins the minute we are born.  Organism aging is noted by the body’s declining ability to respond to stress and the increased risk of disease.  Cellular aging occurs due to damage to our cell membranes by different aggressor agents.  If we consider aging as a disease, then it is treatable.

There are several scientific theories that attempt to explain aging, however, we know that in addition to our bodies being exposed to damaging agents, our internal processes produce waste products, so our bodies need to be able to effectively detoxify and eliminate in order to achieve optimal balance with all cellular functions. This requires proper energy and nutrients which is provided by our food intake.  When we are nutrient-depleted and not eating a healthy diet, we may suffer cellular damage or an impaired ability to repair and detoxify tissues.  When we are over exposed to damaging toxins from our food, environment, stress, and lifestyle, our body’s repair systems cannot keep up and thus structural and functional damage occurs.

Here are some tips that help to prevent and repair damage to your cells:

1)     Increase organic vegetables and fruits in your diet.  These foods are nutrient dense and especially high in antioxidants. Consider juicing as an option including plenty of green juices and perhaps wheat grass juice.

2)     Improve your diet by focusing on eating whole foods while avoiding processed convenience foods that are loaded with cell-damaging ingredients.

3)     Stay physically active!  Exercise improves blood flow to all tissues, increases the body’s metabolism, helps to maintain good energy and assists with detoxification of harmful substances through regular sweating.

4)     Drink plenty of pure, clean water to maintain good cellular hydration.

5)     Get good quality, refreshing sleep each night.  This allows your body time to detoxify, repair and build a strong immune system.

You may consider some therapies offered by local integrative health clinics:

Intravenous glutathione is an antioxidant therapy that neutralizes harmful free radicals that are damaging to our cells.  Free radicals are formed during normal metabolic processes. Glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant, also increases the amount of vitamin E and C in the body.  The more effectively our body scrubs excess free radicals from our system, the slower we age biologically.

Ozone therapy consists of three atoms of oxygen that act as “supercharged oxygen.” As an anti-aging therapy, it stimulates increased uptake and utilization of oxygen by stimulating the increased formation of anti-oxidant enzymes, as well as the enzymes responsible for the release of oxygen at the cellular level. These enzyme deficiencies are often at the root of most chronic disease and are the same enzymes that become depleted as a result of the aging process.  Ozone therapy should be applied in a medical setting and should not be inhaled (some home air filters emit ozone–these are not recommended).

Detoxification and Healthy Living programs consist of a variety of therapies designed to detoxify your body and educate you about healthy living in today’s toxic world.  Such programs offer sauna therapy, organic cleansing diets, juicing, colon hydrotherapy, meditation and relaxation, massage and other spa therapies as well as optimal rest in a non-toxic, healing environment.

Consider these tips for staying young and healthy as you enjoy a vibrant life!

Dry Skin Brushing for Better Health

Important facts about your skin –

The skin is the largest most important eliminative organ in the body and is responsible for one quarter of the body’s detoxification each day.

  1. The skin eliminates over one pound of waste acids each day in the average adult, most of it through the sweat glands.
  2. That the skin is known also as our third kidney.
  3. That the skin receives one third of all the blood circulated in the body.
  4. That the skin is the last to receive nutrients in the body, yet the first to show signs of imbalance or deficiency.

Detoxification is performed by a number of organs, glands, and transportation systems, including the skin, gut, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymphatic system, and mucous membranes.
The dry skin brushing technique deals with detoxification of the skin.

Dry brushing stimulates all the above organs; thus aiding in detoxification because it provides a gentle internal massage.

Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing:

 1. Cleanses the lymphatic system and stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified. NOTE: After several days of dry brushing, you may notice the gelatinous mucoid material in your stools.

2. Removes dead skin layers which can help improve skin texture and cell renewal.

3. Strengthens the immune system.

4. Stimulates the hormone and oil-producing glands.

5. Tightens the skin by increasing the flow of blood, thereby preventing premature aging..

6. Stimulates circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas.

7. Improves the function of the nervous system.

8. Helps aid digestion – helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores.

9. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health.

10. Dry skin brushing helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits.

11. Dry skin brushing also rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in       the skin.

12. Individuals who sit at a computer screen all day long will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing. People who have inactive lifestyles or jobs usually experience stiff and sore necks and shoulders that reach into their arms and down their spines and into their lower backs. Increased blood flow begins entering the areas brushed and you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated.

13. Removes toxic cellulite. Cellulite is made up of toxic materials that are accumulated in your body’s fat cells as they are unable to be eliminated. So, rather than liposuction surgery, try utilizing the “dry skin brushing” techniques combined with an alkaline diet program and a great exercising routine. It will break down the unwelcome toxic body deposits and send them out of your body through the elimination channels discussed above

Tips for Dry Skin Brushing:

Always brush your dry body before you shower or bathe because you will want to wash off the impurities from the skin that are a result from the brushing action.

You can do the brushing head-to-toe or toe-to-head.  It doesn’t matter as long as the entire body is brushed. Long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction towards your heart, to help drain the lymph back to your heart.
IMPORTANT: Stroking away from your heart puts extra pressure on the valves within the veins and lymph vessels and can cause ruptured vessels and varicose veins.

Use a lighter pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet.

Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning.  A thorough skin brushing takes about 15 minutes, but any time spent brushing prior to bathing will benefit the body.

If you are feeling ill, increasing the treatments to twice a day is good.

You can also dry brush areas of cellulite five to 10 minutes twice a day to help achieve cellulite dissolving. This technique needs to be done consistently for a minimum of five months.

Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken; such as areas of skin rash, wounds, cuts, and infections. Also, never brush an area affected by poison oak or poison ivy.

Finish up with your regular shower and ending with three hot and cold cycles. That means turning on the water as hot as you can take it for several seconds, then as cold as you can handle it, then hot, then cold for three cycles. End with either hot or cold. This will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bringing more blood to the outer layers of the skin.

After getting out of the shower
, dry off vigorously and massage your skin with pure plant oils such as olive, avocado, apricot, almond, sesame, coconut or cocoa butter. Add a little peanut and Castor oil to the mix if you have arthritis. This will help relieve some of the pain.

Clean your skin brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, you should dry your skin brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.

If you follow these guidelines in about 30 days you will begin to see and experience the changes. Please remember to be patient and keep up with the program daily.

For a thorough lymphatic cleansing
, perform dry skin brushing daily for a minimum of three months.

Dry Skin Brushing – simple version.

1. Begin with your feet and brush vigorously in circular motions.

2. Continue brushing up your legs.

3. Proceed to your hands and arms.

4. Brush your entire back and abdomen area, shoulders and neck.

5. Use circular counter-clockwise strokes on the abdomen.

6. Lightly brush the breasts.

7. Brush upwards on the back and down from the neck. Better yet, have a friend, spouse or family member brush your back.

The Human Body – Part 2

Restrictions! What restrictions? That was the question that was left unanswered in the last part and hopefully we will address a response in this part.

Thus far we have talked about the nervous system being the first part of the body’s systems to form in the growing embryo and how parts of that system are included with the rest of the developing systems. Let’s talk a little bit more about the nervous system and its various divisions.

Our Nervous system, anatomically, is classified into two areas or branches, the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The CNS is primarily composed of the brain and the spinal cord. The PNS is composed of two subdivisions, the sensory-somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.

All our conscious awareness of the external environment and all our motor activity to cope with it operate through the sensory-somatic division. It responds to voluntary actions.

The ANS is further sub-divided into the Sympathetic and the Para-sympathetic nervous system.

Both of these systems, the sympathetic and the para-sympathetic, run on automatic pilot, in other words, they do not require our conscious input, for them to function.

Stimulation of the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system prepares the body for emergencies: for “fight or flight” (and, perhaps, enhances the memory of the event that triggered the response). It prepares the body for some “violent” activity. It reacts in response to our perception to outside stimuli, whether it is real or not. It alters our body’s functions in response to our thoughts, our intentions, our perceptions of the environment and or situation in which we live or happen to find ourselves in. It pretty much can respond to anything that we react to or act on, consciously or unconsciously.

The para-sympathetic nervous system basically maintains the “normal” functioning of our organs which also includes the actions of some muscles as well as all other functions occurring within the body. It returns the body functions to normal after they have been altered by sympathetic stimulation and maintains it in “normal” until the next sympathetic stimulation occurs.

Even though the autonomic nervous system is considered to be involuntary, this is not necessarily the case. A certain amount of conscious and subconscious control can be exerted over it and bring about changes that may not necessarily be to our benefit or well-being. An example of this can be demonstrated by the breathe control and body function alterations of yogis and martial artists. They are able to not only control their heart rate and their breathing but many are able to change their perception of pain, body temperature, their rigidity or flexibility and their ability to absorb very strong impacts to their body without being hurt.

This is one type of control, the conscious/unconscious altering of the body’s mechanisms, which we utilize to place restrictions on ourselves. It revolves around patterns. Patterns that we learn as we are growing up, patterns that we use as coping mechanisms and/or patterns that we accept as truths at one point in our life and that might not necessarily be applicable during another phase of life.

There are others controls that we utilize to restrict ourselves in one form or another, which we’ll delve into as we continue on this journey of discovery.

Get Started with Fitness – Exercise Ball

By Ruben Guereña and Gerardo Lopez

A little bit of history:

In 1963, an Italian petrochemical manufacturer by the name of Aquilino Casani perfected a way to make large puncture-resistant plastic balls. Although Casanis´s invention was not intended to be used in the health industry, physiotherapists in Switzerland started to use them for rehabilitation purposes hence the name Swiss Ball. In the early 1980´s the Swiss ball was introduced to the United States and by the late 1980´s it would make its way into the gym. Coaches, PT and many others in the fitness field felt that the Swiss ball could be used not only as a rehabilitation tool, but also for developing balance and core strength.

Well this object started out as a ¨Swiss ball¨ but you may know it or have heard of it being referred to as a balance ball, birth ball, body ball, fitness ball, gym ball, gymnastic ball, physioball, Pilates ball, Pezzi ball, sports ball, stability ball, therapy ball, or yoga ball.

Here in Sanoviv´s Fitness Center we call it stability ball.  Most of the guest/patients that come to Sanoviv have never used one before and as I mentioned, the GET STARTED fitness program is not intended to turn you into a super athlete, so our classes are easy to do but we keep in mind that the purpose is to help you improve your core strength and balance.

To effectively perform the sitting exercises on the Stability ball, it is important you know the following rules:

  1. Both feet should be flat on the floor with an even weight distribution. (it is recommended to use a yoga mat to prevent from slipping and provable injury)
  2. Knees should form a angle of 90 degrees
  3. Your upper body should not be leaning in any direction. In other words, your ears, shoulders and pelvis should be in a vertical line.

The following chart will help you know what ball size you should use.

Exercise ball diameter

Person’s height

45 cm

5′ and under

55 cm

5’1″– 5’8″

65 cm

5’9″– 6’2″

75 cm

6’3″– 6’7″

85 cm

6’8″ and taller

Helpful hint: It´s important to note that your height alone is not the only factor in determining ball size. Exercise balls are flexible and offer resistance, so weight is also an important factor. In other words, if you are larger than the average proportion, sitting on the ball will compress it down more, so I this is your case try using the next larger ball size to maintain a 90 degree and in your knees.

Are you ready to work on your balance and getting that core are stronger? Ok, let´s GET STARTED.

The exercises you are about to see, are the same ones that we do in our classes. Before you start this or any fitness program make sure to check with your doctor in case you have any injuries or medical conditions.

The first thing to learn is the basic sitting. Knees and hips should be at approximate 90 degree angles.

Sit on the ball with the spine straight and abs in.  Focus on contracting the abdominal muscles each time you roll the ball.  Repeat for a total of 20 rolls. (10 left side – 10 right side)

Sit on the ball with the spine straight and abs in.  Begin a slow march, alternating lifting the right foot and then the left.  As you get comfortable with the movement, include your arms and lift the opposite arm to the leg (left leg – right arm right leg- left arm). Repeat for 1 minute.

From a sitting position, walk feet forward while ball rolls up your back until it reaches your mid back. Make sure your knees form a 90 degree angle.

Crouch down on your feet, press your shoulder blades against the exercise ball and without moving your feet, extend your back until it is parallel to the floor and lower it back after a short pause.

Breathe out while extending and breathe in while returning to the starting position. Repeat this exercise 10 times

Lie on your shoulder blades on top of the balance ball, knees at 90 degree angles, keep your back straight and focus on keeping your balance. Breathe normally (inhale- exhale) and maintain this position from 15 to 20 seconds for beginners.

Rest your chest, abdomen and pelvis on top of your ball. Place one hand on the floor (make sure your arm is underneath your shoulder), take a deep breath and lift one arm and the opposite leg make sure both are parallel to your body (right arm – left leg). Exhale and lower both arm and leg and do the same with the opposite arm and leg. Repeat exercise 10 times (5 time’s right arm – left leg, 5 times left arm – right leg).

It´s is very important that if you’re just starting out (beginner), you only do 1 set per exercise. For intermediate/advanced perform 2-3 sets of each exercise, resting briefly in between. Remember to breathe freely and deeply throughout each exercise, and keep your abdominal muscles nice and tight. As you get stronger, gradually increase the quantity of sets per exercise.

Are you plugged in? Earthing and the radical implications of energy balance in health.

By Jonás G. Chong Curiel
Head of Department – Psychology and Spirituality Programs
Sanoviv Medical Institute

There are many things to consider when following a healthy lifestyle: the right diet, the right type and amount of exercise, the right supplementation and a long list of etcetera’s that culminate in our desired health goals. Most of us like to stay up to date and learn any new information that can support improved health and vitality.

One thing that is rarely considered and yet of vital importance for overall health is to know if we are plugged into our vital source of energy. Because just like TV’s, computers and other devices are plugged into the light socket, human beings need to plug into their source to function at optimal levels. This source is the Earth. Many scientific studies have been produced that show the direct correlation between connecting with the earth and multiple health benefits. Also, being disconnected can contribute to many of the health problems that we face in modern societies.

As life has evolved on the surface of the Earth, these energies and frequencies have helped shape our constant change. In early civilizations, we lived connected to the Earth; we walked barefoot or with leather shoes that are electrically conductive, when in contact with perspiration. We slept on the Earth on animal skins. Since the 1960’s and the general use of insulated shoes, this connection has been lost, as very rarely do we spend a significant amount of time receiving these energies.

The scientific study and practice of this phenomenon is called Earthing. Earthing is defined as “coupling your body to the Earth’s eternal and gentle surface energies.” Studies suggest that while connected to the earth, you receive its natural healing energy into the body.

Our body responds favorably to this Earth energy, stimulating healing responses, by directly connecting our skin (preferably our feet) to a natural, electrically conductive surface like grass, dirt, gravel or sand. It might seem surprising that one of the best things that you can do for your health is walking barefoot on natural ground.

Many scientists have been studying the effects of Earthing with very promising results. Research indicates that when we are connected to the Earth, the energetic output of our body becomes one with the Earth, thus cancelling out other frequencies that can be harmful to our well-being.

One of the main health benefits of Earthing is being able to use the surface electrons of the Earth for our own internal energetic processes. Electrons play a huge role in the cells ability to stay healthy, decrease inflammation and create balance. Antioxidants are simply molecules that inhibit oxidation of cells by donating an extra electron that free radicals normally steal from cells.

Also, some research suggests that being in direct contact with the Earth helps balance the stress hormone cortisol that is implicated in many of the chronic diseases that we face. Earthing has been shown to stimulate the normal cycle of this hormone.

Some of the benefits of Earthing include:

  • Defuses the cause of inflammation, and improves or eliminates the symptoms of many inflammation related disorders.
  • Reduces or eliminates chronic pain.
  • Improves sleep in most cases.
  • Increases energy.
  • Lowers stress and promotes calmness in the body by cooling down the nervous system and stress hormones.
  • Normalizes the body’s biological rhythms.
  • Thins blood and improves blood pressure and flow.
  • Relieves muscle tension and headaches.

Too Much Caffeine

Is your morning beverage harming your health?

Although organic coffee in moderation may be tolerated by some, most people are generally drinking coffee in excess. If you are like many people you may drink coffee cup after cup in an attempt to increase your energy by getting another “hit” of caffeine. The problem is instead of feeling more energized, you will start to experience energy crashes which can lead to more and more time on the caffeine roller coaster.

There are many symptoms people may experience from too much caffeine; besides the well-known “coffee jitters”. Other symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, anxiety and/or irritability, sweaty palms, fatigue, restlessness and insomnia. Lesser known symptoms of too much caffeine may include muscular pain and tension in the back and/or neck, skin rashes including psoriasis, and even obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

Too much caffeine can also trigger acid reflux, better known as heartburn. Caffeine lowers the pressure on the esophageal sphincter, allowing food to come back up the esophagus, which causes the uncomfortable burning sensations in the chest and in the throat. Like regular coffee, decaf coffee can also trigger heartburn because it is made from highly acidic coffee beans.

What is the answer to this? For certain health conditions, including sensitivity to coffee bean, Teecino is the perfect coffee substitute. Teeccino is non-acidic and the natural potassium from Teeccino’s ingredients helps alkalize the body, making it a perfect choice for people who suffer from too much acidity. Teeccino can be brewed just like coffee and has the full bodied, roasted flavor of coffee. Teeccino is also naturally caffeine free as opposed to decaf coffee, which uses harsh toxic chemicals to process out most but not all of the caffeine.

Because Sanoviv is a gluten free hospital; we recommend using the dandelion root formulas of Teeccino for our guests. Dandelion root is a very popular herb, which is often included in detox and cleansing diets due to its reputation for stimulating the liver and gallbladder.

Caroline MacDougal, the creator of Teeccino, combined certified organic, roasted dandelion root with Teeccino’s other ingredients including organic chicory root, organic carob pods, and organic and sustainably wild harvested ramon nuts to create a variety of dandelion flavors. Barley formulas are also available and naturally caffeine free.

Teeccino is doctor recommended because it also provides an energy boost from pinitol, a natural compound found in carob, one of Teeccino’s herbal ingredients, that reduces insulin resistance and helps reenergize the body.

It may seem like a bit of a task to get off the caffeine roller coaster, depending on how much caffeine you are currently consuming in a day. We recommend a step down approach which simply means adding Teeccino to your regular coffee a little at a time until you have weened yourself completely off the caffeine altogether. It may take up to a month to completely free yourself from the caffeine, but it will be worth it.

Healthy Product for October – Far Infrared Saunas

The most environmentally friendly sauna ever made.

Chemical and heavy metal toxins are now pervasive in our lives and NO ONE is without exposure, even before birth. Toxins damage DNA, lead to neurological problems, disrupt the functioning of hormones, impede the absorption of nutrients, damage energy metabolism, and can manifest as one or more of a long list of symptoms. These problems can strike even early in life, though when they afflict older people, are sometimes dismissed as a “natural” consequence of aging. We think none of these problems should be an accepted part of modern life.

No other solution comes close to correcting toxic exposure like the Thermal Life infrared sauna. It is recommended by the most health practitioners including some of the most respected and cutting-edge experts in their fields. Their infrared saunas are found world-wide in some of the most progressive clinics, as well as the homes of people who make health a priority.

At the Sanoviv Medical Institute located in Rosarito, Mexico, we have 13 years of history using the ‘Thermal Life Far Infrared Sauna’. In 1999 Sanoviv purchased 4 each, ‘Four Person Models’ which are in use 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. To date we have had one minor problem with only one of the units. One phone call and one week later we had our replacement part in hand. Ten minutes after that, it was back online. This is a testament to how well the ‘Thermal Life Far Infrared Sauna’ is built, and the level of customer service you can expect from High Tech Health International.
“The Doctors at Sanoviv highly recommend ‘The Thermal Life Far Infrared Sauna’, accept no SUBSTITUTES.”

The far infrared sauna should be a major tool not only in your detoxification program, but also in your anti-aging program. The extraordinary health benefits of having a Thermal Life™ Far Infrared Sauna in your own home or clinic:

  • Promotes cellular detoxification of heavy metals and chemical toxins
  • Boosts the immune and cardiovascular systems (helps with arrhythmias)
  • Helps to relieve pain as well as muscle soreness
  • Burns calories and helps to control weight (burns up to 600 calories in 25-minute sessions)
  • Total sweating can be reached at lower temperatures (120 degrees) as opposed to regular high heat saunas, thus the infrared sauna is safer for most people with chronic health conditions
  • Helps improve the condition of the skin
  • Lowers lactic acid in muscles after exercising
  • Stimulates endorphins (happy hormones) of the brain
  • Kills bacteria and parasites
  • Improves lymphatic flow and blood circulation
  • Helps relieve symptoms in many “mysterious” cases, possible related to toxins in the body that are released through sweat
  • Made from poplar wood, suitable for those with allergies and chemical sensitivities
