Cheering for Chocolate!

Sanoviv’s Partners in Health Program spotlights companies who meet Sanoviv standards for health and who are willing to share samples of their products with our guests. Created in 2011 by Sanoviv’s Healthy Stuff Store Manager, Donny Ward, we are expanding our partners in 2012.

“Endangered Species Chocolate” has donated Gluten Free chocolate samples for our guests. Here are some reasons (as if anyone needs a reason to eat chocolate) why their product is so wonderfully healthy and good for the soul.

Benefits for the Body

Endangered Species chocolates are combined with All-Natural and Organic ingredients – leaving no room for artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

With cocoa contents ranging from 70 – 88%, dark chocolates boast a healthful dose of beneficial antioxidants and flavonoids.

The Organic Health line combines exotic, healthful ingredients with premium chocolate to create nutrient-added, smart indulgences.

Benefits for the Soul

Chocolate has been shown to trigger the release of endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals, in the body, creating a sense of calm and euphoria.

Phenyl ethylamine, a substance found in chocolate, stimulates our nervous system – closely mimicking the feelings associated with (sigh) falling in love!

Cousins of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline exist in chocolate but in small amounts. Chocolate is a much weaker stimulant than most people think. In fact, a typical 1.4oz. chocolate bar contains the stimulant equivalent of a cup of decaf coffee.

Our own health can be connected to our compassion and generosity toward others. Feel good about indulging in Endangered Species Chocolate knowing that it helps support sustainable forest farming practices and gives back to conservation organizations

Benefits for the Planet

10% of Endangered Species net profits are donated to non-profit groups that support species and habitat conservation.

All of their chocolate is shade-grown. Shade-grown chocolate supports lush forests and the species that thrive there promoting biodiversity, providing shelter for migratory birds, and combating global warming.

Cacao used to create Endangered Species All-Natural and Organic chocolate products is grown on farm co-ops that foster responsible labor practices, community enrichment and sustainable farming.

Get Ready For a Berry Good Summer

With summer just around the corner, berries of all types will soon be plentiful. Berries are among the healthiest foods you can eat. They are high in antioxidants and have an enormous amount of nutritional value.

Blueberries are packed with Vitamin C and fiber. They also contain the mineral manganese which is important for bone health and a healthy metabolism. They are also known to be anti-inflammatory and mood-enhancing. Their powerful antioxidants help to lower cholesterol and the risk of stroke and heart attacks.

Strawberries are also a good source of Vitamin C. In addition, they are high in Vitamin A and folic acid. Although technically not really berries at all, strawberries are a very good source of antioxidants and also contain anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties.

Raspberries contain compounds that are heart-protective as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. They contain specific ketones that may help reduce the production of fat in the body and reduce the risk of diabetes.

We serve berries at www.sanoviv.com a few times a week – excellent antioxidants, but be careful to watch your sugar intake.

With all of these amazing benefits, be sure to indulge your sweet tooth with berries this summer. Just remember that berries are among the highest pesticide-sprayed crops so be sure to look for certified organic and then dig in!

Mattress Musings

Catnaps or a long sleep - the right mattress is important!

Recently, we received a question on the Sanoviv Facebook Page asking for healthy mattress recommendations from our Sanoviv structural experts.

And the answer is:

Sanoviv recommends a natural memory foam mattress. In term of biomechanics, memory foam is best but the most common memory foam, Tempurpedic, is highly toxic and made with petroleum based chemicals. Since you sleep and breathe the air surrounding your mattress seven to nine hours consecutively each night, it is important to make the safest possible mattress decision.

The best company we have found to date is called Essentia, which is the World’s only Natural memory foam mattress company. You can find their products on http://www.myessentia.com
