Medical Diagnostic Tools and Treatments
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves the intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen under pressure. The treatment is conducted in a pressure containment chamber called Hyperbaric Chamber, where the oxygen is administered at higher than normal atmosphere pressure (ATA), normally in the medical field between to 1.5 to 3 atmospheric pressures (ATA’s), at intermittent periods in order to treat specific medical conditions.
The administration of 100% pure oxygen through Hyperbaric Chamber increases the oxygen delivered and concentration in the body 10 to 15 times more than what is delivered at normal atmospheric levels or at sea level (the air we normally breathe in the environment normally contains 19-21 % of oxygen), this allows the oxygen to reach tissues with compromised circulatory function and increases the oxygen entering the blood stream, the oxygen can then reach difficult parts of the body like bones, plasma, the brain and central nervous system as well as the lymphatic system, the body’s cells become saturated with a far greater amount of oxygen than they would under normal pressure, because of this high concentration of oxygen, the HBOT stimulates a positive effect on the immune system due to the increased efficiency of the white blood cells, which fights infection and kills bacteria, accelerates the healing process, growth of new blood vessels, decreases swelling and inflammation, deactivates and clears toxins and metabolic wastes.
Physiological Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygenation:
- Increase saturation of oxygen in arteries and veins
- Tissue concentration of Oxygen 10 to 15 times higher than normally
- Immune System modulation
- Reduction of platelet aggregation
- Stimulates wound healing
- Stimulates Osteoblast activity (cells responsible for bone formation)
- Stimulates Stem Cell production
- Increase Brain blood perfusion and oxygenation
- Stimulates thymus and adrenals glands
- Increases cellular metabolism
With HBOT patients experience relief from fatigue, it has also shown to be particularly effective in the cosmetic and spa treatments such as rejuvenation, anti-aging, weight loss, skin toning, cellulite treatment, wrinkle reduction as well as stress reduction, there are also reports from patients getting increased clarity in thinking. Another use of HBOT is the treatment of certain cardiovascular conditions. HBOT is also increasingly used by sports teams to improve athletic performance and the healing process of injured athletes.
HBOT treatments include three phases: Compression, Isopressure (Treatment) and Decompression.
During this time the pressure is building inside the chamber, and around your body.
After the door has been closed and sealed, you can hear the compressing gas circulate, and, as the pressure rises, you will feel a fullness of the ears, similar to diving or descending in an airplane. This time may last from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the patient’s tolerance.
The treatment phase begins when the pressure reaches the prescribed level; each medical condition has a unique protocol for treatment (1.5 to 3.0 ATA’s, usually 1.7 to 2.0) depending on the condition that is being treated. The pressure is maintained for a period of 60 to 90 minutes, while monitoring the patients tolerance. You will breathe 100% oxygen in 30 minute sets, taking air breaks for 5 minutes. During the treatment you may rest, sleep or read.
After the Treatment phase has ended the attendant lets you know when the treatment is complete. The pressure then is slowly lowered at the rate which is comfortable for your ears. 10-15 minutes later or more if needed the decompression is complete and the door is opened.

Homeopathy and Homotoxicology
At Sanoviv we regularly offer our guests homeopathic treatments for their health issues. We have trained staff in Classical Homeopathy and Homotoxicology, and we apply both disciplines depending on the nature of the illness or the desired therapeutic effect.
Classical Homeopathy was constituted as a therapy by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in 1811, based on his observations of Cullen’s work, who observed that a strong dose of quina (chinchona) provoked symptoms very similar to those of Malaria when administered to healthy people. Since then he conducted experiments on healthy people, where he reported all types of signs and symptoms when taking certain plant extracts. In this way Dr. Hahnemann developed what is known as “The Organon: the art of curing disease.” He combined his observations with those done by Hypocrates thousands of years before about the principle of likeness . To mitigate the toxic effect of the plant extracts that were used back then as medicine, Hahnemann developed the principle of infinitesimal, with which he was able to eliminate the chemical toxicity of the original substance and keep the power of stimulating the biological systems.
Within Classical Homeopathy, we take into consideration the factors concerning the disease, such as signs and symptoms for the prescription of the constitutional homeopathic treatment. And we also take into consideration the factors that might have triggered the disease as well as personality traits to choose an individualized homeopathic treatment. We base our selection process on the principles of Classic Homeopathy, so in this way we offer our guests the “information” that their biological systems need to find a new balance point as we promote the reactivation of their own physiological mechanisms to reestablish health.
Homotoxicology was developed by Dr Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg in 1952. He managed to combine his knowledge of Classical Homeopathy with modern medical science. The resulting synthesis continues to be the bridge between Classical Homeopathy and conventional medicine.
Dr Reckeweg formulated the following principle of Homotoxicology: “According to Homotoxicology, all those processes, syndromes and manifestations that we call diseases, are nothing but the expression of how the body fights off venoms, and that it wants to fight and excrete those venoms. The entire body wins or looses that battle. Those processes that we call diseases are always biological, that is, a natural and non random process that serves as a defense against the venom and as a way of detoxification.”
Within Homotoxicology, we promote detoxification of the organism at a humoral level, at a matrix level and at a cellular level. We base our analysis for the prescription of homotoxicological medicine of the 6 phases of Homotoxicology, promoting that the patient excrete his own homotoxins in a safe and effective way.
Classical Homeopathy and Homotoxicology base their therapeutic effects on the principle of the lowest curative dose. This principle was proposed by Arndt-Schulz and it talks about the relationship between the different levels of dilution and activity at organism level. We can sum this up in the following:
- Small stimuli can stimulate vital functions
- Moderate stimuli can accelerate vital functions
- Strong stimuli can act as inhibitors of vital functions, and
- Very strong stimuli can suspend vital functions
This is the basis for the integrative approach we offer to our guests, and along with the other therapeutic strategies, the guests will see themselves benefited with the multidisciplinary approach, and will experience what Functional Medicine is all about.
The problem of toxicity has grown as the number and quantity of poisonous compounds in the air, water and food have increased. A substantial and growing body of research supports the significant impact on health of acute and chronic exposure to endogenous and exogenous toxins and the efficacy of an individual’s detoxification mechanisms.
Toxins damage the body in an insidious and cumulative way. Once the detoxification system becomes overloaded, toxic metabolites accumulate and sensitivity to other chemicals, some of which are not normally toxic, becomes progressively greater. This accumulation of toxins can wreak havoc on normal metabolic processes.
A toxin is defined as any compound that has a detrimental effect on cell function or structure.
There are four main kinds of toxins:
1. – Heavy Metals: lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, aluminum.
Symptoms can include:
- Muscle pains
- Impaired ability to think or concentrate
2. – Chemical Toxins: PCB’s, phthalates and parabens, volatile solvents, drugs, alcohol, formaldehyde, pesticides, herbicides, food additives.
Exposure to toxic chemicals can give rise to a number of symptoms. Most commonly are psychological and neurological symptoms such as
- Mental confusion
- Mental illness
- Abnormal nerve reflexes
Respiratory tract allergies and increased rates for many cancers are also found in people chronically exposed to chemical toxins.
Exposure to phthalates and parabens is more common than you may realize. Phthalates and parabens are often classified as xenoestrogens, foreign compounds in the body functioning as endocrine disruptors by binding specifically to estrogen receptors.
Endocrine disruptors are associated with diseases such as:
- Breast cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Decreased sperm count
Other health problems associated with daily exposures are:
- Liver toxicity
- Immune effects such as allergies and asthma
- Reproductive toxicity
- Pubertal development
Phthalates, also called “plasticizers”, are found in numerous everyday products such as:
- Children’s toys
- Cleaning products
- Air fresheners
- Vinyl flooring
- Plastic food containers
- Medical products
Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate ester (DEHP) is a common additive to Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). This additive helps make PVC soft and pliable to be molded into eye-pleasing shapes. PVC products are marked with the plastic identification code 3. The analytes measured in this profile are metabolites of DEHP. In perfumes and air fresheners, phthalates are often listed as “fragrance”.
Parabens are used as preservatives to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in personal care products, such as:
- Shampoo and conditioners
- Lotions and creams
- Shaving gels
- Hair gels
- Pre-packaged foods
Volatile solvents are routinely used in industrial processes to manufacture consumer products. A solvent is a liquid or gas used to dissolve a solid, liquid, or gas to create a new solution. Each year, annual production of these solvents numbers in the tens of billions of pounds in the United States.
Air and water pollution are common routes of exposure in both our homes and workplaces. We are also exposed by inhalation or ingestion of car exhaust, paints, glues, adhesives, and lacquer thinners. These volatile solvents are used in large numbers to produce items in our homes such as furniture, building materials, paint, shoes, cleaning and degreasing agents, inks, pharmaceuticals, and as additives to gasoline. For those living and working in urban areas, the exposure to this class of compounds goes on twenty-four hours a day.
3. – Microbial compounds: Endotoxins, exotoxins, toxic amines, toxic derivatives of bile, various carcinogenic substances. Gut derived microbial toxins have been implicated in a wide variety of diseases, including:
- Liver diseases
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Thyroid disease
- Lupus erythematosus
- Immune disorders
In addition to toxic substances being produced by microorganisms, antibodies formed against microbial antigens can cross react with the body’s own tissue “molecular mimicry” thereby causing autoimmunity. The list of autoimmune diseases linked to cross-reacting antibodies include:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Pernicious anemia
- Autoimmune thyroiditis
4. – Breakdown products of protein metabolism: Ammonia, urea.
Using the Functional Medicine model we perform a thorough assessment of the possible exposure to any of these toxins through the course of your life and we evaluate other factors that can interfere with the detoxification mechanisms of your body.
Afterwards, we gather and organize this information and may recommend more specific functional tests to address and individualize the detoxification therapy. When you begin your medical program at Sanoviv we start optimizing the function of the main detoxification organs: liver, colon, kidney and skin. Our main tools include diet, nutraceuticals, intravenous therapy, colon hydrotherapy, spa therapies and exercise.
Our psychology department also evaluates the possible presence of emotional toxicity that may be interfering with your healing processes. Our holistical approach integrates all aspects of health for a full understanding of the antecedents, triggers and mediators of your ongoing health issue no matter how chronic it is.
Whole Body Hyperthermia
Whole Body Hyperthermia Therapy refers to the medical use of heating the whole a body to achieve an elevated core temperature for therapeutic purposes, mostly used as complementary treatment for Cancer. Other terms used are Systemic Hyperthermia, Systemic or Whole Body Thermal Therapy and some call it Hyperpyrexia.
The objective of hyperthermia therapy is to reproduce the beneficial effects of fever, at temperatures in the range of 41 to 42 ºC over a period time of 60 to 90 minutes or at 39 to 40 ºC for a period of 4 to 8 hours.
Contrary to local or regional hyperthermia, systemic hyperthermia aims to alleviate systemic disease conditions. Some of these are:
- Degenerative diseases of the locomotor system.
- Chronic inflammation like sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma, prostatitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and rheumatic conditions.
- Chronic and recurrent viral infections.
- Conditions requiring detoxification.
- Infectious diseases.
Whole Body Hyperthermia Therapy is founded on solid physical and biological principles. Modern Whole Body Hyperthermia devices utilize heat input techniques with skin-compatible and depth-effective water-filtered IR-A-radiation (wIRA) directly into blood-streamed tissues. We measure and monitor the body’s core temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory frequency to achieve the best therapeutic effect with minimal patient toxicity. The effects that can be achieved include:
- Immune system stimulation.
- Direct killing of targeted cells (through short bouts of maximally tolerated temperatures)
- Indirect curative effects (through longer duration treatments at lower temperatures)
- Synergistic effect with other treatment modalities such as biological immune therapies or immunotherapy, orthomolecular therapies, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc.
This is a therapy meant to remove interference fields in our body. These interferences can be mediators of our health problems, not allowing them to be effectively healed. With the application of Procaine in specific parts of the body we support the autonomic nervous system to recover its ability to regulate itself and support the affected tissue to return to balance.
The Transfer Factor treatment consists of natural, microscopic molecules that reside in the bodies of all animals. These are messengers, passing immunity information about the presence of an immune threat and how to properly respond from immune cells to immune cells.
They carry the parent lymphocyte which is sensitized to the threat and alerts the unsensitized or naïve lymphocytes into action against the specific invader.
Transfer factor is effective for the treatment of:
- Parasite infection
- Virus infection
- Bacterial infection
- Mycobaterial infection
- Autoimmune diseases.
It also has a suppressor effect which keeps the immune system from over responding to external factors like allergies and internal factors like autoimmune disease.
There are 2 types of transfer factor: Specific and non-specific.
The specific Transfer Factor is created by first taking a sample of the threat in your body (virus, bacteria, tumor, etc.)This is sent to a lab where it is exposed to white blood cells. These then react against the threat and create immunity, which is then administered to you.
The non-specific Transfer Factor does not go through the aforementioned process, and can still have a powerful impact on increasing your immune system response.
Dendritic cells are a part of the immune system that have a great capacity to capture and process antigens.
They are very effective as messengers, as their function is to raise the alarm of the presence of a foreign cell and activate the immune system to kill it.
These cells are created in the bone marrow and are mainly found in the skin, the inner lining of the nose, lungs, stomach and intestines.
They have great potential as a healing therapy:
- Promising research has been made in the treatment of autoimmune disease such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s disease and Psoriasis.
- They can cause direct destruction of viruses
- Positive effects in the treatment of cancer to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. It can also improve the immune response.
This treatment uses your own blood and white blood cells that are sent to a lab where they are grown in a special environment. These are then converted into Dendritic Cells. They reach maturity after 8 days and are rigorously tested for before they are administered to you.
Colon Hydrotherapy 22.214.171.124.jpgColon hydrotherapy is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of toxins, gas, accumulated fecal matter and mucus deposits. This gentle treatment has been practiced throughout history for its health benefits, with the first recorded use in 1500 BC. Colon Hydrotherapy is more effective than enemas because the entire colon is treated and water is not purposely retained.
Colon Hydrotherapy at Sanoviv is administered by a group of trained female colon therapists. Sterile, single-use equipment introduces filtered water via the rectum. The therapist controls the water flow, and uses external abdominal massage to soften fecal matter and old deposits on the colon wall. This waste is then removed from the body when the gentle water pressure is released.
Colon Hydrotherapy can be used on its own to improve health or it can be used in conjunction with other therapies. When elimination is improved, the body can detoxify more effectively, a key component in healing.
